Amelia's Pov
The evening traffic on the way to Chicago was madness as usual. Horns blaring, public buses squeezing through, and the air was thick with exhaust and harsh exchange of words from roadside sellers. My heart was beating fast the whole ride. Andre's driver had come to pick me up in a sleek black car with cool AC. I kept telling myself: This is the plan, Amelia. Get close, get the money and get out. But my hands were shaking a little as I checked my makeup in my small mirror.
His place was a big mansion in Chicago, the kind you see in magazines. The gates were tall, with beautiful flowers, and lights shining like stars. When I stepped inside, my mouth fell open. Marble floors, huge windows looking over the city, and soft music playing from hidden speakers. It smelled of money and good architectural finishing.
Andre came down the stairs looking fine in a casual white shirt and jeans. His smile made my stomach flip again. "Amelia! You came. Welcome to my small corner of Illinois."
"Small?" I laughed. "This place is bigger than my whole street in Rockford."
He walked close and took my hand. His touch was warm and strong. We stood there for a second with our eyes locked, and the air feeling heavy with something sweet and dangerous.... Chemistry. It was sparking like wires during rain. I wanted to pull him closer, but I stepped back gently. 'Fight it, Ami. This one is for mom's bills, not for feelings,' I grumbled inside me.
"Come, let's eat," he said, leading me to the dining area. The table was set with Chicken soup, yoghurt, grilled chicken, beef, fish, cheese, fresh salad, just name it. Candles burned softly as the lights were turned off to give that perfect romantic dinner.
We talked and laughed as we ate. He told me stories about crazy business deals, how he once closed a big contract during heavy rain while stuck in traffic on the Cairo Rail Bridge. I shared fake but funny tales from my events planning "work." Every time our eyes met, the pull grew stronger. When he passed me water, our fingers brushed and stayed a bit too long. My skin tingled.
"You know," he said, leaning forward, "most girls I meet in Illinois are the same. They smile, take pictures, ask for this and that. But you... you feel real. Like you understand everything."
His words hit me deep. For a moment, I believed him. I wanted to tell him about mom's cancer, the real struggles. But no. I smiled instead. "You're sweet, Andre. But I'm sure you tell all the girls that."
He laughed, but something in his eyes changed for a quick second like a shadow. "Not all. Only the special ones." Then he reached under the table and pulled out a small gift box. "For you.... Just a little something."
Inside was a beautiful gold necklace with a small diamond. My eyes widened. This was it, the money part was starting already. But as I touched it, my heart felt heavy. Why did his gift make me feel warm instead of just happy for the plan?
"Thank you," I whispered. He stood up, came behind me, and helped me wear it. His fingers brushed my neck softly. I closed my eyes as the touch sent sparks down my body. When he finished, he stayed close, his breath warm on my ear. "It looks perfect on you, Ami."
I turned around slowly. Our faces were so close that I could see the small scar on his chin and smell his nice cologne. For a second, I thought we would kiss. My lips wanted it so bad. The tension was thick, like Illinois heat before rain. But I turned my face away at the last moment.
"Andre, this is moving too fast," I said, standing up and walking to the big window. The city lights twinkled below. "I don't even know you well."
He followed me. "Then let me show you." His voice was low and smooth. He put his hands on my waist from behind, gently. "I like you, Amelia. More than I should after one gala and one lunch."
My body wanted to lean back into him. The chemistry was too strong. But my head screamed: He is the target! Use him! Don't fall!
I stepped away again. "You must say that to plenty girls. I saw you with those models at the gala."
Something flashed in his eyes again. Not just playfulness. It looked like control. Like he didn't like me pulling back. "Those ones? They are nothing. Just for fun. You are different. But tell me the truth, why did you really come tonight?"
His question had a sharp edge. Tension began rising in my chest. I laughed to hide my nerves. "To eat good food and enjoy good company,of course? What else?"
Andre smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes fully. "Good. Because I don't like games, Ami. I play to win. Always." He said it like a joke, but I felt the warning underneath. This man had a side that could turn cold. His flaw was starting to show like he needed to test people to stay in charge.
We moved to the sitting room. The Music changed to slow Afrobeats. He pulled me to dance. As our bodies moved close to each other, his hands on my back felt good. When the song ended, he kissed my forehead softly, then my cheek. The heat between us was burning now. I almost gave in...almost.
But I pulled back one more time. "Andre, I need to go soon. It's getting late."
He didn't let go right away. His grip tightened just a little on my arm. "Stay longer. I can make you happy, Amelia, very happy." His eyes searched mine, like he was trying to read if I was real or just another girl after his money.
That look made my stomach twist. He was playing too. I could feel it. Both of us in this game, but his rules felt dangerous. Still, the crazy part of me wanted to stay, to see where this fire would lead.
My phone buzzed. Leila was calling. I used it as excuse. "My friend is calling. I have to answer."
While I spoke to Leila quickly, telling her I was fine, I watched Andre with my side eye. He was staring at his phone with a small frown, typing fast. When I finished, he looked up with that charming smile again, but the shadow was still there.
"I'll drop you home," he said.
In the car, the silence was full of tension. He held my hand the whole time. "Next time, no running away," he whispered as we reached my Rockford apartment. Then he leaned in and finally kissed me. It was like fire and honey. My head spun. I kissed him back before I could stop myself.
When we broke apart, I was breathing hard. "Goodnight, Andre."
As I walked inside, my legs felt weak. The necklace felt heavy on my neck. This man was trouble...Rich trouble. His charm was pulling me in, but that controlling look... it warned me. He liked to win. And I was playing with big fire.
I touched my lips and smiled sadly. 'Amelia, fight it. You want his money, not his heart.' But deep down, I knew the game was already getting messy.
