Dump the Alpha, Mated to the King

Available on Beidou

The night Adrian came home from the hospital, Mira sat on the window seat in their bedroom, her knees drawn to her chest.

Moonlight spilled across the garden below-the rose bushes she had planted with her own hands, the ones Adrian had put in the ground the year he proposed. "When they're in full bloom," he had said, "our pups can run through them."

She looked down at her fingers. There used to be a ring there.

Her phone screen glowed with an old photo she had found earlier that afternoon-three winters ago, Adrian standing behind her in the kitchen, his chin hooked over her shoulder, both of them fumbling with a cake froster. Back then, he used to whisper in her ear: "Mira, I'm afraid a lifetime won't be enough to love you."

She remembered the way he said it. Soft. Careful. Like he was holding something breakable.

What was he whispering in another woman's ear now?

She closed the photo. The screen went dark, and his smile vanished into the glass.

She didn't want to drown in these memories. She had told herself to focus-to find a way to break the blood vow, to prove to everyone who thought she was hysterical that she was anything but.

But every time the night closed in, the loneliness wrapped around her, and the past came flooding back whether she wanted it or not. The fragile thread of the mate bond in her chest pulsed with a dull, persistent ache-her wolf's silent grief.

An engine rumbled in the driveway below. A car door slammed. Footsteps approached the house.

Mira didn't move.

She tracked his steps through the foyer, up the stairs, to the bedroom door-where he paused. A beat longer than he used to. He was hesitating.

He never used to hesitate.

The door swung open, and Adrian's face immediately tightened. The room was too quiet. No warm lamp. No sound of her crossing the floor to meet him. She was perched on the windowsill, her robe loose around her, empty-handed, like she had been sitting there all night.

"You're still awake."

"You're back." Her voice was flat, more statement than question.

He loosened his tie with a sharp tug, the fabric whispering against itself in the silence. "Do you have any idea how long I waited at the hospital today? The doctors said my recovery would be twice as fast if you'd just shown up. But you didn't. And you didn't answer my calls."

Mira finally turned to look at him. His face was paler than an Alpha's should be-dark circles carved beneath his eyes, his cheekbones sharper than before. An Alpha's body shouldn't heal this slowly. Unless his wolf was unsettled.

"Why are you still sitting there?" He strode toward her, his pace impatient. "I'm back. Aren't you going to come to me?"

Mira slid her legs off the windowsill. Her bare toes touched the cold wooden floor, but she didn't stand.

"You went to see Ivy again today."

"She was shaken up. She needed another checkup."

"Why did her checkup require you?" She lifted her gaze to meet his. "Alpha, you are the Alpha of Silver Ridge. Not her personal guardian."

Adrian's expression darkened. He moved to the edge of the bed, his tall frame cutting the lamplight in half, casting a shadow across her.

"Are you interrogating me?" His voice went cold.

"I'm asking you a very simple question."

"Mira." He paused, drawing a breath, visibly reining in his temper. "She's alone out there. No family. No husband. Am I supposed to turn my back on her?"

"Have you ever stopped to think that I'm alone too?"

A beat of silence. A single heartbeat-short enough that she could almost convince herself he had hesitated.

Then he sighed and sat on the edge of the bed. The mattress dipped under his weight, and his hand reached for her-those long, familiar fingers that had once traced slow circles on her back through sleepless nights. Now they hovered, and her spine went rigid before they could touch her.

"Don't make this into something it's not," he said, oblivious to her tension. "You're my wife. You'll always be my wife. That's not going to change."

It was the tone of a man pacifying a sulking child. Not a lover's tenderness. Charity patience.

Mira stared at that hand, suspended in the air between them. She had once depended on it to pull her out of nightmares. Now it hung there like a threshold she wasn't sure she wanted to cross.

He didn't even call her his mate anymore. Just wife.

Adrian seemed to tire of the distance between them. He rose, closed the gap, leaned in until his breath ghosted across her cheek. "I need you, Mira."

Her heart clenched.

Not I miss you. Not I'm sorry. Not even I want you.

I need you.

The finest doctors, the strongest wolfsbane tonics-none of it could quiet the ache of a blood vow left cold. He wasn't here because he had realized his mistakes. He was here because he needed her power to heal himself.

He tilted her chin up, his thumb grazing her lower lip, blind to the tears gathering in her eyes. He wanted her mouth. Her warmth. Her submission.

But he didn't want her.

Mira shoved hard against his chest. "Don't touch me!"

Adrian's eyes flashed gold. "Mira. My patience has limits. You can't hide in the shadows forever."

He lunged forward, and his Alpha dominance flooded the room like a suffocating tide. Before she could move, he had her pinned to the bed, his weight pressing her down. Panic exploded in her chest-poison flooding her throat.

"Submit to your Alpha," he growled. "That is your duty as Luna."

Mira's heart splintered. This was the man she had married? The one who had waited three years, who had promised he would never push her?

He was gone. In his place was someone who saw her body as his right-not a gift, not a trust.

He knew what nightmare had happened to her three years ago. He knew she had lost her mother, lost her sense of safety, lost the ability to be touched without flinching.

Adrian had been the only one who could reach her. They had spent three years building that trust. And tonight, he had shattered it with his own hands.

Darkness swallowed Mira's vision. Her breath came in shallow, desperate gasps, the walls closing in around her.

She didn't remember reaching for the lamp.

But she remembered the crack of ceramic against his skull.

Adrian reeled back with a snarl, blood streaming down his temple. "What the hell is wrong with you, Mira?"

She didn't answer. Didn't check how badly she had hurt him.

She shoved him off and scrambled across the floor, crawling to the farthest corner of the room. Her fingers tore the worn blanket from the armchair and wrapped it around herself like armor, like a shield, like something to hide the girl still screaming inside.

Her whole body shook.

Adrian froze. His wolf went still.

He didn't need to ask. He could smell it-the sharp, sour terror flooding off her skin. The bond between them pulsed with her panic, ragged and raw.

Panic attack.

Again.

"Mira-" Adrian raised one bloodied hand. "I wasn't-"

"Get out!" Her voice cracked, splintered, broke apart. "GET OUT!"

For a moment, something flickered across Adrian's face. Not quite guilt. Not quite regret. Something harder. Colder.

He wiped the blood from his brow and looked down at her-curled in the corner, wrapped in a blanket, shaking like a trapped animal.

His jaw tightened.

"You can't live in fear forever, Mira." His voice was flat now. Exhausted. Done. "I am your Alpha. You have to move past this eventually. Three years, Mira. I've waited long enough."

He pulled the door open.

"This is the last time."

The door clicked shut behind him.

Mira sat alone in the silence, clutching the blanket to her chest, finally letting the tears fall.

She didn't know how long she stayed there. The tears had dried somewhere in the dark-not because the pain had faded, but because her body had simply run out of salt and sorrow.

Her phone buzzed.

She blinked at the screen, vision blurry. It was a message from her attorney.

Elena: There's precedent for breaking a blood vow. But the petition must be filed directly with the Alpha King himself.

Elena: Are you sure to do the next?
