Chapter 2 of 52

His Beautiful Ruin

Available on official platform

The next morning smelled like butter, cinnamon, and exhaustion.

By eight o'clock, the bakery was already alive with its familiar rhythm. Mixers hummed behind the production floor, trays clattered against metal counters, and employees moved between ovens and workstations with practiced efficiency.

The warmth should have been comforting, but Inara barely noticed it.

She sat in the administration office, staring at a purchase invoice she'd read three times without understanding a single number.

"You entered the flour shipment twice." Ella leaned over her shoulder, pointing at the monitor. "Inara?"

"Hm?"

"You okay?"

Inara blinked several times, trying to find the mistake. "Oh."

She corrected the entry, checked it again, then saved the file. "Sorry. I barely slept."

Ella folded her arms. "Hospital?"

The smile disappeared from Inara's face. She nodded once.

"How's Noah?" Ella asked.

"Stable."

The word should have sounded reassuring.

Instead, it reminded her how expensive stability could be.

Noah would need follow-up scans, medication, weeks of recovery, and possibly physical therapy if his ribs didn't heal properly. Every explanation from the doctor had become another number in her head, another expense she had no idea how to cover.

Ella reached over and squeezed her arm. "If you need anything..."

"I'll be okay." Inara answered too quickly, almost as if saying it with enough confidence could make it true.

It was habit.

Before Ella could argue, the office door opened.

"Morning, everyone."

Zain Ashford stepped inside with a paper cup in one hand and a tablet tucked beneath his arm. He greeted the staff as he passed, his usual easy manner softening when he reached Inara's desk.

"How's your brother?"

Inara looked up, surprised. "You... heard?"

"Rachel called me last night." His expression turned sympathetic. "I'm glad he's going to be okay."

"Thank you, sir."

There was a brief silence, one she immediately recognized. Her boss wanted to ask more. She wanted otherwise.

Fortunately, another voice interrupted.

"Mr. Ashford."

Everyone turned.

A tall man in a navy suit stood near the glass doors.

Erik Revani.

He was the Managing Director of Revani Ventures, the investment arm behind Ashford Bakery's recent expansion. Unlike the executives who usually visited the bakery, Erik carried himself without the stiffness that came with his title.

His attention moved through the room briefly before settling on Inara. His expression changed. Not dramatically, just enough for her to notice.

"You look exhausted," he said.

Inara gave a small, embarrassed smile. "Long night, Mr. Revani."

"I heard about Noah."

She glanced at him, a mixture of surprise and amusement crossing her face. "Oh... I didn't expect you to know."

"Well, Zain mentioned it," Erik quickly added, as if he didn't want her wondering how he'd heard about it. His gaze lingered on her for another second. "I hope he's getting better."

"Thank you."

Zain looked between them, trying hard to hide his amusement. "Erik, I thought you were here to discuss the expansion numbers."

"I am."

"Then let's go before you forget why you're here." Zain was already walking toward the conference room.

Erik nodded, but before following him, he looked back at Inara.

"Take care of yourself too."

The words were simple. Still, something about them stayed with Inara after he walked away.

She lowered her eyes to the invoice again. There was no time to think about it. She had a problem to solve.

*

An hour later, Inara stood outside the main meeting room with a cream-colored envelope pressed against her notebook.

She had rewritten the proposal twice. The first version sounded too desperate. The second sounded as though she were trying to negotiate a business deal. The third was the one she had kept.

Amount requested: $2,500.

Purpose: Emergency medical expenses.

Repayment period: Ten months.

Monthly payroll deduction: $250.

She had even included a clause allowing the company to deduct the remaining balance from her final salary if she resigned before the loan was fully repaid.

She wasn't asking for charity. She was asking for time.

When the conference room door opened, Zain stepped out.

Inara straightened.

"Mr. Ashford, do you have a minute?"

"Of course." He glanced at the envelope in her hands, then stepped aside. "Come in."

Inara entered and closed the door behind her.

Zain gestured toward the chair. "Sit."

She did as instruct. For a moment, she simply held the envelope in both hands. Then she placed it on his desk. A moment of hesitation crossed her face. "I need to ask for an employee loan."

Zain's expression changed. "How much?"

"Two thousand five hundred dollars."

"That much?"

"Yes... sir." Her voice remained steady, but her heartbeat didn't. "My brother's medical expenses are more than I can cover right now, but I can repay it through payroll deductions."

She opened the envelope and pushed the first page toward him. "I've calculated ten months. Two hundred and fifty dollars each month."

Zain read the proposal. Then the second page. His eyebrows rose slightly. "You... calculated the interest, too."

"If the company requires it."

"And this clause?"

"If I leave before the loan is paid, the remaining balance can be deducted from my final payment."

Zain looked up. "You've thought this through."

"I... had to."

That was closer to the truth. She had barely slept, but she'd spent enough years taking care of herself and Noah to know that panic didn't solve anything.

Zain closed the proposal, letting out a small sigh. "Inara, you don't have to make this sound like a corporate contract."

"I'm aware of that, sir."

"Then why did you?"

She looked down at the pages. "Because I don't want to ask for something I can't repay."

For a moment, Zain said nothing. That was the Inara Hale he knew.

She rarely asked for help. And when she finally did, she'd find a way to make sure it didn't look like she was asking for charity.

Zain nodded. "I'll check what the company can approve."

"Thank you." A small, sincere smile slipped onto Inara's lips. Then, she rose from the chair. "I understand if you can't approve the full amount."

"I didn't say that." Zain lifted one eyebrow.

Her smile changed into the tired one again. "I just wanted you to know I've thought about how to repay it. Thank you again, sir."

Inara nodded politely before leaving.

The moment the door closed, it opened again, and Erik stepped in with a tablet in hand.

"Were you eavesdropping, Mr. Revani?" Zain crossed his arms, his teasing gaze landing on his friend.

Erik ignored the accusation. "Is she in trouble?" His voice carried genuine concern.

Zain's grin widened. "You really like that woman."

"That's not what this is about."

"I didn't say it was."

Erik almost rolled his eyes, but the urgency of Inara's situation kept him from playing along. He looked toward the hallway. "She came prepared."

"That's Inara Hale."

Erik's attention returned to Zain. "You seem know her well."

"Well, Mr. Revani, she works for me. And she's one of the best employees I've ever had."

Erik smiled faintly. "She is."

Zain's eyes narrowed. "Are you smiling, Erik?"

Erik immediately flattened his expression, but it was too late.

Zain burst into laughter, loud enough to make Erik shake his head. "You should make a move, bro. It's been months."

Erik shot him an annoyed look. Then his expression turned serious. "Do you want me to approve the expansion proposal or not?"

Zain's laughter faded. He muttered something under his breath. "You're no fun."

Erik chuckled quietly. His gaze drifted toward the hallway again. "Will you approve her request?"

Zain looked at him. There was no teasing in his expression anymore. He knew how serious his friend was. "The company will discuss it first."

Erik seemed lost in thought for a moment. Before he could say anything else, his phone vibrated. He pulled it from his pocket.

The screen displayed a single name.

Lucien.
