The folder said DIVORCE AGREEMENT - CROSS / CROSS on a printed label, the kind his legal team used for anything they wanted to look official and unarguable.
Mia stared at it for a long moment without opening it. Her hand was still resting against her stomach. She hadn't moved it, and she was suddenly, desperately aware of that, like he might notice and understand everything before she said a word.
"What is this," she said. Not a question. She already knew.
"I think it's better for both of us." Damian's voice was even, rehearsed, the voice he used in boardrooms when he'd already decided something and was simply informing the room of the outcome. "I spoke to my lawyer this week. The terms are generous - the penthouse in Milan, a settlement that will keep you comfortable for the rest of your life, no contest on any of it."
"Generous." She almost laughed. It came out instead as something thin and disbelieving. "You've had a lawyer draft a settlement. This week."
"Since Tuesday." He said it like a man reporting a stock price. "I think we both know this marriage was never going to be more than what it's been. I don't want to keep you trapped in something neither of us chose."
*Tuesday.* Three days after the terrace. Three days after the one night that had felt, to her, like the beginning of something.
She understood then, all at once, with the particular clarity of a wound before the pain arrives: it hadn't meant anything to him at all. Or worse - it had meant something, and that was exactly why he was ending it now, fast, before it could turn into an obligation he hadn't planned for.
She thought of Elena at the gala. The two-second glance across the ballroom that Mia had told herself was nothing.
It hadn't been nothing. She just hadn't wanted to admit which kind of something it was.
"Is it her," Mia said quietly. "Is that what this is."
Something flickered across his face - not guilt, exactly, but close enough to it that she knew she'd landed somewhere true. "That has nothing to do with this."
"Doesn't it?"
"Mia." For the first time since she'd walked in, he actually looked at her, and there was something almost gentle underneath the practiced calm, which was somehow worse than if he'd stayed cold the whole time. "You deserve someone who chooses you. Not someone who was told to."
*You deserve someone who chooses you.*
She would think about that sentence for years afterward - turn it over, examine every possible reading of it, because in the moment she heard only the ending of something and missed entirely that it might have been the closest he'd ever come to admitting what he actually felt.
She didn't tell him.
The words she'd rehearsed in the car, in the elevator, in front of the mirror - *I'm pregnant* - sat in her throat and refused to come out, because some old, proud, wounded part of her would rather he never know than have him think, even for a second, that she was trying to trap him the way his family had trapped him into this marriage in the first place.
If he wanted out, she would give him out. Cleanly. Without a single thing tying him back to her.
"Fine," she said, and picked up the pen he'd already set on the desk, next to the folder, as if he'd known all along she wouldn't fight him on it. "Where do I sign."
Something crossed his face then - surprise, maybe, or the faintest flicker of something that looked almost like disappointment that she'd agreed so easily - but he recovered fast, sliding the folder the last few inches toward her and pointing to the marked line.
Her hand shook, once, right before the pen touched paper. She pressed it flat against the desk until it stopped.
She signed.
"I'll have my things out by the weekend," she said, standing before he could say anything else, before her voice could betray the thing she was carrying that he'd never get to know about. "Congratulations on your freedom, Damian."
She made it all the way to the hallway before the tears came, and by then the study door was already closed behind her, and there was no one left to see.
