Chapter 3 of 79My Son's Father Is My Sister's Fiancé
Available on official platform
Emma Bennett couldn't move.
Five years.
Five years of wondering about the man she had spent one unforgettable night with.
Five years of raising their son alone.
And now Ryan Kingsley stood less than twenty feet away.
For one brief moment, every instinct told her to turn around and leave.
This was a mistake.
A terrible mistake.
She didn't belong here.
She didn't belong anywhere near men like Ryan Kingsley.
Then Noah's face flashed through her mind.
The hospital bed.
The doctor's warning.
The urgency in Dr. Peterson's voice.
Emma forced herself to stay where she was.
Noah needed her courage more than she needed her fear.
Ryan adjusted his suit jacket as he stepped away from the black luxury car.
Employees immediately straightened.
Conversations stopped.
Security personnel became visibly alert.
The atmosphere around him shifted in a way Emma had never experienced before.
Power.
Not the loud kind.
The effortless kind.
The kind that made people move without being told.
Ryan glanced in her direction again.
His gaze lingered for barely a second.
Then he looked away.
No recognition.
Nothing.
To him, she was just another stranger standing outside the building.
The realization stung more than she expected.
Of course he didn't remember her.
Why would he?
Ryan entered the building.
The revolving doors closed behind him.
Emma inhaled deeply.
Then she followed.
She made it only halfway across the lobby before security stopped her.
"Ma'am?"
The guard stepped into her path politely but firmly.
"Can I help you?"
Emma swallowed.
"I need to speak with Ryan Kingsley."
The guard's expression barely changed.
"I'm sorry, but Mr. Kingsley doesn't accept unscheduled visitors."
"It's important."
"So everyone says."
Emma blinked.
"What?"
The second guard sighed.
"You're not the first person who's shown up asking for a private meeting."
Heat crept into Emma's cheeks.
Great.
They thought she was one of those women.
"I promise that's not why I'm here."
The guards exchanged a look.
Emma resisted the urge to scream.
Instead, she took a calming breath.
"This is a personal matter."
"I'm afraid that's not enough."
She closed her eyes briefly.
Noah.
Think about Noah.
Not yourself.
Not your pride.
Your son.
"My son's life may depend on this meeting."
The sincerity in her voice seemed to catch their attention.
After several minutes of discussion, one guard finally handed her a form.
"You can leave your name and request."
Emma filled it out immediately.
"Will he see it?"
"We'll pass it along."
Not exactly reassuring.
But it was all she had.
Three hours later, Emma was still sitting in the lobby.
Executives came and went.
Women in expensive heels crossed marble floors carrying designer handbags.
Men in tailored suits discussed million-dollar deals while walking past.
Emma sat quietly in a corner chair.
Her shoes were worn.
Her phone battery was nearly dead.
She hadn't eaten since breakfast.
The contrast between her world and theirs couldn't have been clearer.
One unexpected hospital bill could destroy her finances.
Meanwhile, people here spent more on lunch than she earned in a day.
She checked the time again.
Maybe she should leave.
Maybe—
"Ms. Bennett?"
Emma looked up.
A professionally dressed woman stood before her.
"I'm Claire Morgan, Mr. Kingsley's executive assistant."
Emma immediately stood.
Claire checked her tablet.
"Mr. Kingsley can spare five minutes."
Five minutes.
After waiting three hours.
Emma would take it.
"Thank you."
The elevator ride felt endless.
The higher they climbed, the tighter Emma's stomach became.
Finally, the doors opened.
Claire led her through a sleek hallway lined with floor-to-ceiling windows.
At the end stood enormous double doors.
Claire knocked once.
Then opened them.
"Ms. Bennett."
Emma stepped inside.
The office was larger than her apartment.
Glass walls overlooked the city.
Modern furniture filled the space.
Everything looked expensive.
Everything looked intimidating.
Ryan sat behind a massive desk.
He didn't stand.
Didn't smile.
Didn't offer a greeting.
Instead, he studied her carefully.
Emma felt that gaze all the way down to her bones.
Something flickered in his expression.
As though he almost recognized her.
Almost.
But not quite.
"Ms. Bennett."
His voice was deeper than she remembered.
"You requested an urgent meeting."
Emma's throat tightened.
"Yes."
Ryan leaned back in his chair.
"Then let's not waste time."
The silence stretched.
Emma had rehearsed this conversation all morning.
Now every word had disappeared.
Ryan glanced at his watch.
"I have another meeting in ten minutes."
The impatience in his tone pushed her forward.
She couldn't afford hesitation anymore.
"I have a five-year-old son."
Ryan's expression immediately hardened.
The change was instant.
Cold.
Guarded.
Predictable.
Emma knew exactly what he was thinking.
Ryan folded his hands.
"Is that supposed to mean something to me?"
She felt a flash of anger.
Not because he was suspicious.
Because she couldn't entirely blame him.
"I'm not here for money."
Ryan's face remained unreadable.
"That's usually what comes next."
Emma took out her phone.
"My son is seriously ill."
Nothing.
No reaction.
Then she forced herself to say it.
"Ryan..."
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
"Noah is your son."
The room went silent.
Ryan didn't move.
For several seconds, he simply stared at her.
Then he laughed once.
Not because he found it funny.
Because he couldn't believe what he'd heard.
"Excuse me?"
Emma held his gaze.
"You heard me."
Ryan slowly stood.
The atmosphere in the room changed immediately.
He was tall.
Imposing.
Every bit as intimidating as the newspapers described.
"Do you have any idea how many women have made claims like this over the years?"
Emma remained where she was.
"I'm not those women."
"No?"
His voice sharpened.
"And I'm supposed to believe that after one conversation?"
"I didn't come here expecting belief."
Ryan crossed his arms.
"Good."
Emma pulled up a photograph.
"This is Noah."
She placed her phone on the desk.
Ryan looked down.
His expression didn't change at first.
Then something shifted.
Just slightly.
The boy in the photo had dark hair.
Dark eyes.
A familiar shape to his jaw.
Not enough to prove anything.
But enough to make Ryan look twice.
His gaze lingered longer than he intended.
Then he looked away.
"No."
Emma frowned.
"No?"
"I don't make decisions based on photographs."
His voice was controlled again.
"If you expect me to take this seriously, there will be a DNA test."
Emma answered immediately.
"Fine."
Ryan blinked.
Most people argued.
Negotiated.
Became offended.
Emma hadn't hesitated.
Not even for a second.
The confidence in her response caught him off guard.
As though she already knew the outcome.
As though she had nothing to fear.
Ryan studied her again.
For the first time, uncertainty crept into his thoughts.
"Interesting."
Emma slipped her phone back into her bag.
"If that's all, I'll leave."
She turned toward the door.
Then Ryan asked quietly,
"One question."
She stopped.
"If this child is really mine..."
His eyes narrowed.
"Why wait five years to find me?"
Emma stood motionless.
The answer came without hesitation.
"I never needed you before."
Ryan said nothing.
Emma looked back at him.
The exhaustion in her eyes was impossible to miss.
"But I need you now."
Her voice softened.
"To save our son."
Then she walked out.
The office felt strangely quiet after she left.
Ryan remained standing beside his desk.
His gaze drifted toward the photograph still displayed in his memory.
The boy's face.
The resemblance.
The certainty in Emma's voice.
None of it made sense.
Yet none of it felt entirely false either.
His phone suddenly rang.
The sound broke the silence.
Ryan glanced at the screen.
Sophia Harrington.
A small smile icon appeared beside her name.
His fiancée.
The woman he was supposed to marry in two weeks.
He answered.
"I'm downstairs," Sophia said cheerfully. "Ready for lunch?"
Ryan looked out the window.
His thoughts were still inside the conversation he'd just had.
Still fixed on a little boy named Noah.
A little boy who might be nothing.
Or might change everything.
As Sophia continued speaking, Ryan slowly lowered his gaze to the business card Emma had left behind with her contact information.
For the first time all afternoon, doubt slipped through the walls of certainty he had built around himself.
And somewhere deep inside, a question refused to go away.
What if she was telling the truth?
