Chapter 3 of 52

Rejected By Her Fated Mate

Available on official platform

Horn cut through trees a second time, closer, and Rhaevan's whole body changed - careful stillness gone, replaced by something colder and far more dangerous.

"Move," he said. "Now."

I found my feet - four of them, strange and yet somehow already mine - and ran.

Forest blurred past in scent and shadow, new eyes catching details old ones never could: exact moment startled owl broke from branch quarter mile away, heat shimmer of fox den buried beneath roots.

Power sang under skin like it waited my whole life for permission.

It should have felt like freedom.

Felt like being hunted.

"They saw color," I said - or thought I said. Words came out closer to snarl, and yet Rhaevan understood anyway, which told me he'd done this before - ran beside someone newly shifted and unused to own voice.

"They saw enough," he agreed grimly. "One glimpse of silver-blue fur is enough to start a rumor. Rumor enough to reach wrong ears eventually. That's a problem for another night. Tonight, we just need you alive and out of Ashveil territory."

Behind, shouting organized into something more purposeful - not confused trackers stumbling on anomaly anymore, but hunters coordinating pursuit.

I recognized one voice cutting above others, sharp with command.

Vaelric.

He came by himself.

"He rejected me," I snarled, more to myself than Rhaevan, fury cutting cleaner than fear had. "He humiliated me in front of the entire pack, and now he's chasing me?"

"He rejected his mate."

Rhaevan's voice was flat, controlled, but I caught an edge underneath.

"He didn't reject whatever you just became. I wager very good money he has no idea what he actually gave up tonight, and I wager even better money he's about to find out in the worst possible way."

We broke from the treeline onto a ridge overlooking the river gorge, moonlight turning water to hammered silver far below.

Rhaevan stopped so abruptly I nearly overran him.

"End of easy ground," he said. "From here, it's either a river, or we turn and fight five Ashveil trackers and an Alpha who has every legal right, under pack law, to kill anything on his territory that outran his men and doesn't belong to him anymore."

The system's silver text pulsed insistently, and beneath urgency, I felt something else stir.

No fear this time.

Something colder.

Sharper.

Instinct that hadn't existed in me an hour ago, whispering that water below wasn't a wall.

It was the door.

"I can make a river," I said, surprising myself with how certain I sounded.

Rhaevan studied me - this half-wild, freshly shifted creature wearing color out of forbidden legend - and something like respect moved behind grey eyes.

"Then let's find out what else that bloodline remembers how to do."

We went over a ridge together.

Fall lasted long enough for me to hear Vaelric's voice break from the treeline behind us, raw with something I refused to call fear for me, and long enough to hear him shout a single word that would echo in chest long after cold water closed over head.

"Lunara-!"

Then the river took me.

And the last thing I heard from Ashveil territory was my own name, spoken by a man who'd thrown it away, sounding for the first time like something he was afraid to lose twice.
