Available on official platform
EVA BENTLEY POV:
The moment the heavy front door clicked shut behind the Merritts, the polite parlor masquerade shattered.
Cyrus whipped around, his eyes blazing with fury. "Eva! Do you have any idea what you just did? You ruined months of hard work with the Merritt family!"
Right on cue, Ramona launched into her theatrical routine. She pulled Brynlee into a protective embrace, wailing, "My poor, sweet girl! What is she going to do now? After the scene Eva just caused, how will the Merritts ever look at us the same way?"
Brynlee buried her face in her mother's shoulder, instantly reverting to the fragile, innocent victim for my father's benefit. Her tears flowed on command. "I'm so sorry, sister... I didn't mean for any of this to happen... I had no idea..."
I watched their little three-person circus with absolute, icy clarity.
"Hard work?" I threw Cyrus's words back at him. "You mean the hard work of selling me off like a piece of livestock just so Brynlee could steal my spot?"
Cyrus choked, his face turning an ugly, mottled plum. "How dare you speak to me like that! Everything I do is for this family!"
"For this family, or for yourself?" I stepped forward, meeting his glare without flinching. "You need the Merritt money to plug the massive holes in your sinking business. And the Merritts? All they want in return is the vehicle modification shop my mother left me."
The words dropped like a bomb. Cyrus and Ramona froze, the color draining from their faces. They clearly hadn't expected me to see right through their little arrangement.
Cyrus forced a scoff, desperately trying to maintain his authority. "Nonsense! Why on earth would the Merritts want that rundown shack?"
"A rundown shack?" I laughed coldly. "Bentley's Chrome Heart is a legend. My mother built it with her bare hands. Anyone who is anyone in the Nevada MC scene knows exactly what it's worth. It's not just a chop shop; it's a brand. A symbol. It comes with a twenty-year client list and exclusive channels for rare parts you couldn't even dream of getting your hands on."
Ramona's eyes shifted nervously. It was obvious she understood the true value of that property far better than my father did.
Realizing intimidation wasn't going to work, Cyrus pivoted. His tone softened. "Eva, listen to me. What's done is done. Just... accept this arrangement for now. Do it for me. You can still live here, you can keep the shop, but you just need to... cooperate with Brett."
Bile rose in my throat. "Cooperate? You mean bend over and become his dirty little secret? His mistress?"
Cyrus said nothing. He was perfectly fine with an arrangement that stripped me of every ounce of my dignity.
A profound, freezing chill settled in my chest. I turned my back on them. "This is not up for debate," I stated, heading straight for the stairs.
"Stop right there!" Cyrus roared at my retreating back. "Eva Bentley, do not forget who the master of this house is!"
I didn't even break my stride. This place hadn't been my home for a long, long time.
Once inside my bedroom, I threw the deadbolt and leaned back against the heavy wood, taking a long, shuddering breath.
Crying was for the weak. My mother had taught me early on that in a world of oil and steel, tears only make the parts rust.
I walked over to the window and looked down at the detached garage sitting on the edge of the estate property. It was my mother's blood, sweat, and tears. It was my last stronghold. And I would be damned before I let anyone rip it from my hands.
Pulling out my phone, I quickly fired off an encrypted text to my best friend, Mia Stone. Mia was a bartender at 'The Vulture's Nest'—the most notorious biker bar in town. She knew everyone, heard everything, and most importantly, she was fiercely loyal.
The message was brief: Code Chrome. Secure the ledgers. All of them. Now.
"Code Chrome" was a pre-arranged failsafe between us, meaning the garage was under a maximum-level threat.
Those ledgers held more than just financial records; they contained my mother's private contacts—major MC presidents, lone-wolf riders, and underground parts suppliers. They were the true soul of Bentley's Chrome Heart. I couldn't risk Cyrus or the Merritts getting their greedy hands on them.
A moment later, the phone buzzed in my palm. Mia's reply: Gus has secured them. Done.
I caught my reflection in the vanity mirror. My green eyes were burning with a cold, unforgiving fire. They thought I was some sheltered princess they could push around and manipulate.
They were dead wrong. I was my mother's daughter. It wasn't delicate, aristocratic blood running through my veins; it was high-octane gasoline.
A movement outside caught my eye. Down in the courtyard, Brett and Brynlee were putting on a show of taking a romantic stroll, but their eyes kept drifting toward the garage. Brynlee was practically glued to Brett's side, wearing a sickeningly triumphant smirk.
I pulled the blackout curtains shut, severing their line of sight.
This was a war I had to win. For my mother's legacy, and for my own survival.
I dropped to my knees and reached under my bed, dragging out an old, battered toolbox my mother had left me. I popped the rusty latches.
Bside wrenches or screwdrivers,it held a set of tactical self-defense gear and thick, banded stacks of emergency cash.
