The few hours remaining before dawn were a waking nightmare. Elinore barricaded herself in her bedchamber, pacing the freezing wooden floorboards like a caged animal. Every creak of the ancient palace settling sounded like the marching boots of an execution squad.
The psychological pressure was catastrophic, but the physiological rebellion happening inside her own body was worse.
The strange, throbbing heat she had felt earlier had not vanished. Instead, fueled by the adrenaline and sheer terror of Corbin’s revelation, it had burrowed deeper into her nervous system. It flared in agonizing, unpredictable pulses, turning her skin clammy and hypersensitive. The tight linen bindings crushing her chest felt like a corset woven from barbed wire, restricting her lungs until every breath was a ragged gasp.
Exhaustion eventually overpowered her adrenaline. She collapsed onto her narrow cot, her body trembling violently under the thin wool blankets. She closed her eyes, desperate for a moment of reprieve.
But sleep offered no sanctuary. The moment her consciousness slipped, she plunged into a vivid, suffocating hallucination.
It was the same recurring nightmare that had haunted her for the past week, but this time, it was infinitely more intense.
In the dream, she was running barefoot through a pitch-black, ancient forest. The air was thick and heavy, smelling of damp earth, decaying pine needles, and the sharp, metallic tang of fresh blood. A suffocating, primal terror chased her, snapping at her heels.
Suddenly, she crashed into a massive, rough-barked pine tree. She spun around, her back pressed against the wood, gasping for air.
The shadows between the trees parted.
Two massive, glowing yellow vertical slits ignited in the darkness. They were the eyes of an apex predator, locking onto her with a lethal, unblinking focus.
A colossal beast stepped into the weak moonlight. It was vaguely humanoid but impossibly massive, its skin covered in intricate, glowing tribal tattoos and dense, obsidian scales. The sheer physical density of its aura pushed the oxygen out of the forest. It radiated a dominating, aggressive male pheromone that hit Elinore’s senses like a physical shockwave.
The beast lunged.
Elinore tried to draw her sword, but her arms felt like lead. The beast slammed its massive hands onto the tree trunk on either side of her head, completely trapping her. It leaned in, its scalding, feral breath washing over her pale neck.
In the dream, Elinore did not feel the stoic, princely defiance she usually projected. Instead, a terrifying, shameful weakness flooded her veins. The beast’s proximity triggered a violent surge of that strange heat in her lower abdomen. Her knees buckled. A soft, breathy whimper escaped her lips—a sound of absolute, biological submission that she had never made in her waking life.
The beast opened its jaws, its elongated canines glinting in the dark, and lowered its head toward her exposed throat—
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Elinore violently jerked awake. Her upper body snapped off the mattress.
Outside the window, a crack of thunder shook the palace glass. Lightning strobed, illuminating her bedroom in stark, bone-white light. Elinore was drenched in a cold sweat. Her heart hammered against her ribs so hard she thought her chest would crack. She pressed a trembling hand against her throat, phantom fangs still searing her skin.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The violent pounding on her heavy oak door resumed, shaking the dust from the frame. It was entirely devoid of protocol. There was zero respect for a royal title.
"Prince Elinore!" a gruff, impatient voice barked through the thick wood. It was Flint, the Captain of the Royal Guard. "Open the door!"
Elinore sucked in a sharp, ragged breath. She swung her legs over the edge of the bed, her boots hitting the floorboards. She forced her racing heart to slow, locking the terrified girl from the dream back inside the cold, impenetrable vault of the Prince.
She marched to the door, grabbed the iron handle, and yanked it open.
Flint and his lieutenant, Clay, stood in the dim corridor. They were fully armored, their hands resting on the pommels of their broadswords. But despite their aggressive posture, Elinore instantly noticed the thick layer of cold sweat beading on Flint’s forehead. Clay’s eyes kept darting nervously down the hall, his face the color of wet ash.
These were hardened veterans who had fought in the border skirmishes. They were terrified.
"What is the meaning of this insolence?" Elinore demanded, dropping her voice into its harshest, most authoritative register.
Flint didn't flinch or offer an apology. He looked at her with a mixture of contempt and poorly concealed panic. "His Majesty demands your presence in the Throne Room. Immediately. The envoys have arrived."
The floor seemed to drop out from beneath Elinore’s feet. The envoys. The monsters were here.
"And Princess Josefina?" Elinore asked, her voice dangerously quiet.
Flint looked away, avoiding her eyes. "She has already been escorted to the antechamber. Do not delay, Your Highness. The King is... impatient."
Flint and Clay stepped aside, flanking her in a tight formation. This wasn't an escort. It was a prisoner transfer. They were ensuring she didn't try to interfere.
Elinore locked her jaw. She straightened her spine, projecting an aura of absolute royal dignity, and stepped out of the room.
The march through the cavernous corridors of the palace felt like a death march. The usual morning sounds of servants scrubbing floors and lighting fires were completely absent. The entire palace was as dead and silent as a massive tomb.
As they approached the South Arch, the air pressure began to change. It felt incredibly heavy, pushing down on Elinore’s shoulders. It was the exact same suffocating, predatory aura she had felt in her nightmare.
The strange heat in her lower abdomen gave another hard, painful throb. Her body was reacting to something ahead. Something terrifyingly powerful.
They finally stopped before the ten-foot-tall, solid brass doors of the Throne Room.
Flint stepped forward. He placed his armored hands flat against the metal and shoved the heavy doors open.
A wave of cold, stagnant air rolled out, carrying the sharp, sour stench of absolute human terror. Elinore took a deep breath, her fingers brushing the hilt of her shortsword, and stepped over the threshold into the abyss.
