Coleen POV:
The next morning, I threw on a plain beige trench coat, grabbed my dark sunglasses, and drove an old Volvo from the underground garage.
Thirty minutes later, I parked beneath the Sharp Pack Medical Center and took the elevator directly to the intensive care wing.
I pushed open the door to Room 402. The sterile smell of medical disinfectant masked the subtle werewolf scents in the air.
My mother, Eleanor, lay in the center of the bed, her face pale and sunken.
She had been poisoned by a rare mutation of wolfsbane years ago, which had shattered her inner wolf’s energy core. Her heart was fragile now; any severe shock or emotional strain could damage her pulse and send her into a critical relapse. My parents had always believed my marriage to Hazen was stable and happy. I could not bear to shatter that illusion while my mother’s life still hung by a thread.
Hearing the door, my mother opened her eyes weakly and tried to smile. “Coleen... Did Hazen come with you?”
A knot tightened in my throat. I swallowed the bitterness and held her bruised, needle-marked hand. “The pack called an emergency board meeting. He couldn’t get away.”
Eleanor let out a soft sigh, squeezing my fingers with the little strength she had. “Ever since the Savage Pack collapsed, you’ve carried too much. I only wish I could see you truly happy in your marriage. Then I could rest easy.”
“Mom, don’t say that,” I whispered, tucking the blanket around her shoulders. “As long as you’re alive, as long as you can still smile like this, nothing else matters.”
After two hours, the sedatives took hold, and she drifted into a deep sleep.
I quietly slipped out of the room, heading toward the chief physician’s office to collect her latest blood panel reports.
As I turned the corner into the VIP pediatric corridor, a pair of familiar voices drifted toward me.
I stopped dead in my tracks. Drawing on the instinct of my hidden bloodline, I pulled my aura inward, erasing my scent entirely.
Through the reflective glass of the nursing station, I saw them clearly.
Hazen was standing outside room 608, still wearing the tailored shirt from last night. Domonique was wrapped tightly in his arms, her face buried against his chest as she sobbed softly.
She wore a loose hospital gown, looking fragile and defenseless, her small hands clutching Hazen’s lapels.
Two pack nurses walked past, whispering behind their clipboards.
“The Alpha stayed by her side all night without sleeping a wink,” one murmured.
“I heard the kid is his secret heir,” the other replied. “Our supposed Luna won’t last much longer in that house.”
I leaned my shoulder against the cold wall. The words felt like physical stones hitting my ribs, but strangely, the burning anger was gone. Only a hollow chill remained. If my mother heard even a whisper of this, her heart would never survive it. That thought alone kept my claws buried deep inside my skin.
In the reflection, Hazen raised his large hand, gently stroking Domonique’s long hair with an endless patience he had never once shown me.
“Stop crying. Toby’s fever broke,” Hazen’s deep voice echoed down the quiet hallway. “I’ll assign the pack’s best healers to watch him.”
Domonique looked up at him, her eyes red and pleading. “Hazen... if I hadn’t been forced to leave back then, would we be a happy family right now?”
Hazen went silent for a moment. He didn’t deny it; he simply pulled her closer against his chest.
A wave of intense nausea hit my throat. I turned on my heel and walked swiftly toward the public restroom at the end of the corridor.
I stepped into a stall, locked the door, and leaned over the sink, dry-heaving silently as tears hit the cold ceramic basin.
Inside my soul, my white wolf stirred violently against its suppressors, agitated by the betrayal, but I forced it back down. I could not expose my strength here. I could not let my parents’ illusion shatter. I could not let my mother’s heart break because of me.
Ten minutes later, I turned on the faucet and splashed cold water over my face until the redness around my eyes faded.
I looked in the mirror. The woman staring back was pale, but her eyes were cold and clear.
I took a small glass bottle of scent neutralizer from my bag and sprayed it across my wrists and neck.
Stepping out into the hallway, I walked with steady, even strides back toward the physician’s office, acting as if I had seen nothing.
As I passed the pediatric wing, Hazen’s sharp Alpha senses detected my footsteps. He turned his head, his gaze locking onto me like a hawk.
Shock flashed across his features when he realized it was me, and his hands dropped away from Domonique’s waist.
I kept my eyes fixed forward, walking past them without offering a single glance.
Just as our shoulders were about to brush, Hazen’s hand snapped out, wrapping around my wrist in an iron grip. “Coleen? What are you doing here?”
