Elena's pov

The cheap motel room smelled like stale smoke and old rust.

I sat on the edge of the lumpy mattress, wrapping a thin, scratchy towel around my shivering shoulders.

Outside, the rain poured down against the cracked windowpane. My wet dress lay in a cold heap on the bathroom floor.

My hands trembled violently as I reached into my small bag. I pulled out the tiny plastic stick and stared at the two bright pink lines. I was really having Julian's baby.

Hot and bitter tears welled up in my eyes. How could the happiest discovery of my life happen on the exact night everything was torn away from me?

Suddenly, a quiet chime beeped from the tiny, prepaid phone Adrian had shoved into my hands right before he rushed me into a taxi.

I grabbed the phone with shaky fingers. A dark screen popped up with a high-priority video notification. It was a secret, encrypted message sent from Adrian's private account just minutes ago.

I pressed play.

Adrian's pale, terrified face filled the small screen. His eyes were wide, and sweat dripped down his forehead as he sat in the driver's seat of his car.

"Elena, listen to me very carefully," Adrian whispered frantically into the camera. The background noise hummed through his speakers. "I don't have much time. Julian is blind right now, but you are completely innocent. The corporate files in your room? They were planted by my father and stepmother, Vivian."

I gasped, pressing a hand against my mouth.

"They have been stealing billions from the company through offshore accounts for years," Adrian continued, his voice cracking with panic. "When they realized someone was getting close to discovering their money laundering ring, they needed a scapegoat. They picked you, Elena. They set you up so Julian would throw you away and never look for you again."

Fresh tears spilled over my cheeks. It wasn't Julian who built the trap, but he had believed it. He had thrown me out into the storm without a second thought.

"I attached a hidden file to this message," Adrian said, looking over his shoulder nervously. "It contains part of the financial ledger. I am driving to the main police station right now to hand over the original files and clear your name. Once Julian sees the truth, he will..."

Before Adrian could finish his sentence, a loud, violent crash echoed through his audio feed.

The video on my screen cut out instantly, replaced by a dark static signal.

My heart stopped. "Adrian?" I screamed at the tiny phone screen. "Adrian, answer me!"

Panicked, I grabbed the remote control from the nightstand and clicked on the small television hanging on the wall. The screen flickered to a live breaking news broadcast.

A news anchor's grave voice boomed through the quiet motel room. "We interrupt this program with urgent news. A luxury sedan belonging to the Sterling family has just suffered a catastrophic explosion on the downtown highway. Witnesses report seeing a massive fireball..."

The camera zoomed in on the highway. A car was engulfed in roaring, blinding orange flames.

My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit. I fell off the bed and hit the cold carpet, sobbing so hard I couldn't breathe. Adrian was dead. They had killed him right on the street in broad daylight.

A quiet ding signaled another incoming file on the prepaid phone. It was an automated text message Adrian had set to send if his video was interrupted.

Elena, if you are reading this, I am already dead. They will stop at nothing to cover their tracks. They will kill anyone who knows the truth. Do not try to clear your name. Do not try to go back to Julian. Run. Change your name. Hide where no one can ever find you. And if you are carrying Julian's child, protect that baby with your life. It is the only innocent thing left.

I squeezed the phone in my fist until my knuckles turned white.

I looked back down at the positive pregnancy test resting on the nightstand. I couldn't save my relationship. I couldn't fix my reputation. The man I loved thought I was a monster, and his family was willing to murder their own blood to protect their evil secrets.

I wiped the tears from my cheeks, my fear slowly hardening into something tough and solid.

I pulled off my promise ring, the simple silver band Julian had given me a year ago, and dropped it into the trash can. I grabbed my bag, wrapped a dark sweater tight around my body, and looked in the mirror one last time at the broken girl staring back at me.

"You won't get my baby," I whispered to the empty room.

I opened the motel door, stepped out into the freezing rain, and vanished into the dark night.
