Chapter 3: The Masquerade Ball
The morning light didn't bring clarity; it brought a tuxedo bag, swiped from the back of a luxury SUV by a friend of Rosalind's who owed a favor. It was a midnight-blue gown, silk that felt like liquid moonlight, and it was the only thing standing between Jessamine and social erasure.
"You look like you're going to a funeral, Jess," Rosalind said, leaning against the dorm wall while Jessamine zipped the dress. "Lighten up. If they catch you, I'll just initiate the 'nuke' protocol on the server room. The whole school's digital records will revert to 1995. That's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for the aesthetic."
Jessamine checked her reflection. She looked like one of them, a chameleon hiding in plain sight. "I'm not going for the aesthetic, Ros. I'm going for blood."
"Well, try to have a drink while you're at it. Champagne is free for the predators," Rosalind grinned.
The St. Jude Gala was a sensory assault. Chandeliers dripped light like molten gold over a sea of backless dresses and tailored suits. Jessamine moved through the crowd, her heels feeling like medieval torture devices, keeping her eyes locked on Malachi. He was the school's golden boy, the one who handled the "logistics" for Korbinian-meaning he was the one who kept the dark secrets buried.
"Check it out," Jessamine whispered into her hidden earpiece. "Malachi is near the punch bowl. He's looking nervous."
"Probably because he knows he's a hack," Rosalind's voice crackled back. "Keep moving. Don't stop to admire the decor."
Jessamine glided toward the edge of the terrace where Malachi stood, hunched over his phone. She pretended to adjust her earring, leaning close enough to hear.
"I don't care what the cost is," Malachi hissed into the device. "Just scrub the audit. If the board sees the discrepancy in the endowment, we're both finished."
Jessamine's breath hitched. A financial audit? That was more than just cheating on tests; that was potential jail time for their parents.
"You're listening to things you shouldn't, little shadow."
The voice was like velvet dipped in ice. Jessamine froze, her hand hovering near her throat. She didn't have to turn around to know it was Korbinian.
"I was just looking for the bathroom," Jessamine said, turning with what she hoped was a bored, elite smirk. "This layout is confusing. Why build a maze for a party?"
Korbinian was dressed in charcoal, looking like a monolith of dark intention. He stepped into her space, his eyes tracking her pulse at her throat. "The bathroom is on the other side of the estate. You're currently in the middle of a very private discussion, and you're looking at Malachi like you want to write his obituary."
"He's standing in the middle of a ballroom, Korbinian. It's hardly private," Jessamine countered, tilting her chin up. "Maybe he shouldn't be so loud if he's doing something illegal."
Korbinian chuckled, a low, rich sound that made the hair on her arms stand up. "You're playing a dangerous game, wearing that dress, walking through a room full of wolves. Do you know who owns the security firm patrolling this gala?"
"Let me guess. Your father?"
"My brother," Korbinian corrected, his gaze dropping to the floor where a security guard was scanning the area with a tablet. "And they're looking for someone who doesn't belong. You're not on the guest list, are you, Jess?"
Panic flared in her chest, sharp and hot. If she was caught here, she wouldn't just be humiliated; she'd be expelled before the clock struck midnight.
"I have an invitation," she lied, her voice steady.
"Liar," he whispered. He stepped closer, his hand coming up to rest on the small of her back. His touch was burning, a stark contrast to his cool demeanor. "They're ten seconds away from checking IDs in this sector. You have two choices: bolt and get tackled by security, or dance with me and hope they're too intimidated to interrupt."
"I'd rather jump off the balcony," she hissed.
"Suit yourself, but the fall is three stories." He grabbed her hand, pulling her firmly into the center of the floor. "Dance, Jessamine. Try to look like you're enjoying the privilege."
She stumbled, then regained her footing, forced to follow his lead as the music swelled into a frantic, rhythmic beat. She pressed her palms against his chest, feeling the steady, calm thrum of his heartbeat.
"You're shaking," he noted, his eyes locked on hers.
"It's the adrenaline," she retorted. "I find your company... unsettling."
"Is that what we're calling it?" He spun her around, her skirts flaring. She saw the security guard pause, look at Korbinian, and bow his head respectfully before walking away.
"You just saved me," she whispered, the irony tasting like ash. "Why?"
"Because I'm not done with you," he murmured, his breath brushing against her temple as they moved in sync. "And because I like the way you fight. It's rare to find someone who doesn't crumble the second I exert a little pressure."
"You think this is a game, don't you? Some romantic comedy where the bad boy saves the poor girl?"
"Hardly," he said, pulling her closer until there was no space left between them. "I'm not a hero, Jess. I'm the person who keeps the world spinning because everyone else is too lazy to do it. And you? You're the grit in the gears."
"You're a narcissist, Korbinian."
"And you're a thief," he shot back, his eyes flashing with a dangerous intensity. "Did you really think I didn't know you and Rosalind were planning to expose Malachi? You're so predictable."
Jessamine tried to pull away, but he held her fast. "What are you going to do? Tell him?"
"Why would I tell him?" He leaned in, his lips inches from her ear. "I find his incompetence amusing. But you should be careful. You're digging into the past, Jess. Things that involve people far worse than me."
"Is that a threat?"
"It's a warning," he said, his tone turning deadly serious. "You're obsessed with the 'rot' at this school. You want to know where the money comes from? Start by asking your little computer genius friend why she's really here."
Jessamine's heart skipped. "What are you talking about?"
"Rosalind didn't just stumble into St. Jude because she's a tech wizard," Korbinian whispered, his hand tightening on her waist as the song reached its crescendo. "She has her own reasons for wanting this place burned down. Her family wasn't destroyed by poverty, Jess. They were destroyed by the very people you're trying to impress."
The music slowed to a haunting, melodic crawl. Jessamine stared up at him, her mind reeling.
"You're lying," she said, though her voice wavered.
"Am I?" He pulled back, his mask of indifference sliding back into place, his grey eyes turning cold once more. "You're so busy looking for a villain in me that you haven't realized you're being played by your own team."
He dropped her hand as if she were a hot coal and stepped back into the crowd, disappearing into the shadows of the gala. Jessamine stood alone in the center of the dance floor, the world spinning around her.
"Jess? Jess, come in!" Rosalind's voice crackled in her ear. "The security bypass is failing! I'm being tracked-get out of there now!"
Jessamine didn't look back. She turned and sprinted toward the terrace doors, the silk of her dress tearing as she pushed through the heavy curtains. She didn't know who to trust, she didn't know if she was a savior or a pawn, but as she scrambled into the cold night air, she knew one thing for certain: the war had changed.
She wasn't just fighting for the truth anymore. She was fighting for her survival. And for the first time, she wasn't sure if she was the one holding the match.
