Claire stood paralyzed, her high heel catching the edge of a floor seam with a sharp click.
The boy near the pillar rubbed his eyes with the back of his small fist. He wore a crisp white collared shirt beneath his tailored English blazer, a miniature Windsor knot tied meticulously at his throat.
Blinded by his own hands, the boy took a clumsy step backward. His heel caught the base of the pillar, and his fragile frame tilted dangerously toward the sharp metal edge of a brass waste bin.
Claire did not think. Six years of surgical precision and maternal instinct moved her body before her mind could process the danger.
She released Daisy's hand and lunged forward across the slick marble.
Her arms swept out, catching the boy beneath his slender ribs just inches before impact. She pulled his lightweight body flush against her chest, absorbing the momentum as she dropped onto both knees.
A faint scent of herbal medicine mixed with warm milk hit her senses. Claire's fingers began to tremble violently against the boy's blazer.
The boy gasped, lifting his face. Long, dark eyelashes fluttered open, still wet with unshed tears.
Claire stared down at him, the blood in her veins roaring in her ears.
His porcelain-pale skin, deep, solemn eyes, and sharply sculpted little jaw mirrored Toby so perfectly that even Claire's clinical mind faltered. Only the tiny mole beneath his left nostril distinguished him from the son she had raised. This was more than a passing resemblance. It carried the unmistakable suggestion of shared blood.
The boy blinked at her. There was no spoiled entitlement in his gaze, only a guarded, heartbreaking hesitation.
"Ma'am... thank you," Leo whispered, his voice slightly hoarse.
Claire's chest felt as though it had been carved open with a blunt instrument. Words tumbled past her lips before she could stop them. "Sweetheart... where are your parents? What is your name?"
Leo shrank his shoulders back slightly, avoiding Claire's intense, searching gaze. "I'm Leo. My daddy's security is waiting outside."
Claire remained kneeling on the floor, holding herself at his eye level. Her thumb moved involuntarily, gently wiping away the damp trace of a tear from his lower lash line.
Her touch was featherlight, yet the moment her skin brushed his cool, smooth cheek, the nightmare of that storm-lashed night tore through her again—the blood, the sterile lights, and the doctor telling her that her firstborn was dead. Six years of grief cracked open beneath the impossible familiarity of Leo's face.
Daisy trotted over, tilting her head as her large, round eyes widened in shock.
"Whoa, Mommy," Daisy gasped, pointing a small finger. "Is Toby wearing a different blazer?"
Leo blinked in confusion, glancing at the girl who shared his height and age.
The sharp, furious clatter of stilettos echoed down the hallway, followed by an abrasive, high-pitched screech.
"Leo! Where do you think you're wandering off to?"
At the sound of the woman's voice, Leo's body flinched violently. He pulled away from Claire's arms like a startled fawn, retreating two steps until his back hit the cold stone pillar.
Claire caught the raw terror flickering across the child's eyes. Her gaze instantly turned to ice.
Charlie Castro—the woman Manhattan society pages publicly identified as Leo's mother—stormed around the corner in four-inch Christian Louboutin pumps and an oversized Chanel tweed suit. Her heavy designer bag swung from her forearm, while thick concealer failed to entirely mask the tight, harsh lines around her mouth.
Seeing Leo standing before an impeccably dressed woman, Charlie's face contorted in rage. She lunged forward, her manicured nails digging harshly into Leo's slender upper arm as she yanked him behind her skirt.
Leo winced, biting down hard on his lower lip, but he did not make a single sound.
"Who are you? Get away from my son!" Charlie snapped, looking Claire up and down with sneering hostility.
Claire rose to her feet in a single, fluid motion. Her slender, five-foot-eight frame radiated an oppressive, razor-sharp authority that instantly shattered Charlie's hollow bravado.
Claire tilted her head, her lips curling into a frigid, mocking smile. Inside her coat pocket, her fingers tightened around the surgical steel.
"Your son almost fell and split his skull on a metal bin, ma'am," Claire said, her tone cool and measured. "I merely kept him from bleeding on the floor."
Charlie scoffed, adjusting the heavy pearl choker around her neck. "Save your fake concern. Half the social climbers in Manhattan try to use Leo to get close to the Bentley family. Don't waste your breath."
Without waiting for a reply, Charlie yanked Leo's arm with unnecessary force, dragging the stumbling boy toward the private VIP suite corridor.
Leo was pulled off balance, but just before turning the corner, he glanced over his shoulder. His wide, dark eyes locked onto Claire with a quiet, pleading look.
Claire remained rooted in the center of the marble corridor. Her gaze burned into the empty turn where the boy had disappeared, a cold, lethal fury igniting deep in her chest.
The child might be her firstborn. But resemblance was not proof, and Claire would not allow six years of grief to outrun the evidence.
She pulled out her phone and called Christiana.
"I want everything on the boy named Leo, Charlie Castro, and their connection to the Bentley family," Claire said the moment the call connected. "Birth certificates, hospital files, custody records, DNA reports. Start with every delivery record from six years ago."
If there was even the slightest possibility that Leo was the child stolen from her, Claire would tear apart every record in Manhattan to prove it.
