Chapter 3 of 44The Warlord's Comeback: Claiming My Lethal Queen
Available on official platform
Caroline Shaffer POV:
The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the gentle lapping of thermal water against the titanium frame of Calhoun's wheelchair.
He didn't reach for a weapon. He didn't call for guards. But the frost in his slate-gray eyes sharpened into a lethality that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. The air around the spring felt instantly colder.
"Say that again," he rumbled, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper.
I didn't back down. I kept my knife lowered at my side, my stance balanced. "The tremor in your right hand. The slight slackness in your hip flexors.
That isn't muscular atrophy from a severed spine. It's neuro-toxicity. A concentrated blend of Crotalus venom and belladonna alkaloids, administered in microscopic daily doses."
I took a slow step closer to the edge of the rocky bank.
"It paralyzes the peripheral motor neurons while leaving sensory perception intact. It mimics lower-body paralysis perfectly, but within another six months, the toxin will cross the blood-brain barrier and shut down your respiratory system.
You won't just be out of the saddle, Calhoun. You'll suffocate in your own bed."
I inhaled through my nose, catching the faint medicinal draft lingering on his damp skin.
"And whoever is poisoning you is doing it through your daily physical therapy. Someone you trust with your life is quietly measuring your coffin."
For ten long seconds, Calhoun stared at me through the swirling steam. Not a muscle in his sculpted torso twitched. He was an apex predator evaluating a completely unexpected variable.
Then, a ghost of a dark, humorless smirk curved his lips.
"Caroline Shaffer," he murmured.
My grip on the knife tightened fractionally. He knew who I was.
"Dale's quiet little shadow," Calhoun continued, his eyes trailing over me with surgical precision. "The stray girl who washed dirty cuts in the back room and kept her head down.
And here you are... standing in the mist, diagnosing a three-year medical assassination from ten feet away with a blade in your hand."
"This is private property," I retorted, ignoring his assessment. "You broke into my sanctuary. Pack up your chair and get the hell off my land."
"Your land?" Calhoun let out a dry, low laugh that sounded like tires rolling over crushed stone. "This parcel was bought six months ago through an offshore trust with masked routing numbers out of the Cayman Islands. A very professional cover for a girl who allegedly worked cash jobs at local horse stables."
He leaned back against the headrest, crossing his heavily tattooed arms over his bare chest. Water dripped from his broad shoulders, catching the pale morning light.
"Nothing moves in these mountains without my knowledge, Caroline. I've been using this spring for three weeks to clear the burning in my legs. I assumed the owner was a ghost. Turns out, it's a girl running from my own club."
"I'm not running from anyone," I replied coldly. "Dale Edwards is a joke."
"Dale is an impulsive idiot," Calhoun agreed, dismissive. "He put a ten-thousand-dollar bounty on your head at sunrise.
Half the prospects in the state are scouring the highways for you as we speak. But you don't seem particularly concerned about that, do you?"
"I can take care of myself."
"Maybe you can," Calhoun said smoothly, leaning forward. The sheer physical presence radiating from him was staggering, completely defying the mechanical chair beneath him. "Or maybe you haven't realized that the people backing Dale aren't interested in bringing you back to talk. You made a fool out of a patched brother in front of sixty witnesses. The club doesn't let insults like that slide."
He rested his palms on the wheelchair rims, his gaze pinning me to the gravel.
"So here is my proposition, Caroline. You clearly have hands that know medicine, and eyes that see through poison. Put on my colors. Be my woman. Move into my quarters at the compound.
Under my personal banner, no man, no cop, and no bounty hunter will dare breathe in your direction. In exchange... you purge this poison from my veins."
I stared at him for a long moment, then let out a sharp, mocking laugh.
"Trade one outlaw's leash for another?" I shook my head, disgust lacing my tone. "I spent two years scrubbing floors for a coward.
I have zero interest in becoming the trophy of a crippled king who can't even keep his own officers from slipping venom into his tea."
I emphasized the word crippled with deliberate cruelty.
Calhoun's pupils contracted until they were two chips of black obsidian. The temperature plummeted. He looked at me as though he were calculating the exact amount of force required to snap my neck.
"You're testing my patience, little girl," he growled.
"Then go back to your clubhouse and wait to die, Mr. President," I replied, turning my back on him. "Our business here is done."
