A blinding shaft of morning sunlight pierced through the gap in the blackout curtains, striking Jenilee squarely across her closed eyelids.
A groan tore from her throat. Every muscle in her body felt as if it had been dismantled and haphazardly reassembled. Her hips ached with a dull, throbbing heaviness, and her throat was as dry as sandpaper.
She shifted, trying to roll over, but an immovable weight pinned her to the mattress.
A heavy, corded arm was slung possessively across her bare waist, holding her back flush against a furnace of bare, muscular chest.
The memories of the previous night hit her like a physical blow.
The terrace. The elevator. The penthouse doors flying open. The tearing of silk. The desperate, shameless cries she had torn from her own throat as this man took her apart piece by piece until the drug was burned out of her blood.
Jenilee froze, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Slowly, millimeter by millimeter, she turned her head.
Deven lay asleep beside her. In the daylight, his features were even more devastating—a sharp, aristocratic nose, high cheekbones, and a square jaw shadowed with dark stubble. His split lower lip, marked by her own teeth, was a brutal reminder of reality.
The absolute master of Manhattan finance. The man whose signature could make or break global markets.
And she had spent the night clawing his back like an alley cat.
Panic, cold and sharp, flooded her veins.
She reached down with trembling fingers, carefully lifting his heavy forearm from her stomach. She held her breath, sliding her legs toward the edge of the king-sized mattress.
She almost made it.
Just as her toes brushed the plush carpet, the arm snapped back around her waist with the speed of a striking viper.
With a single, effortless jerk, Deven yanked her backward across the sheets, slamming her back into his chest.
"Leaving so soon?"
His voice was a low, morning rasp against the nape of her neck, thick with sleep but loaded with pure, unyielding power.
Jenilee scrambled to pull the Egyptian cotton sheet over her bare breasts, her face burning.
"Mr. Barnes," she choked out, staring at the opposite wall, unable to look him in the eye. "Last night... it was a mistake. I'm going to pretend it never happened."
The bed shifted.
Deven rolled over, propping his weight on one elbow as he leaned over her. His slate-gray eyes were wide open now, cold and assessing as they raked over her flushed face, the dark bruises blooming on her collarbone, and the defensive way she clutched the sheet.
"Pretend it never happened?" A faint, mocking smirk touched his lips. "You think you can use Deven as an antidote and just walk out the door?"
"I didn't use you!" she snapped, her temper flaring through her humiliation. "I was drugged by Mrs. Sanders! You took advantage of the situation—"
"I saved you from being thrown to a pair of hired thugs in an alley," he corrected coldly.
He reached out, his long fingers casually catching a strand of her tangled dark hair, winding it slowly around his index finger.
"I take responsibility for what is mine," Deven said, his tone as flat and businesslike as if he were acquiring a distressed tech startup. "Name your terms. A condo on the Upper East Side. A trust fund. Unlimited credit. Whatever it takes, except my name and my heart, you can have it."
The words hit Jenilee like a bucket of ice water.
A trust fund. A condo. A kept woman.
The utter arrogance of it turned her blood from cold fear to scalding fury.
"Keep your money," Jenilee spat, yanking her hair out of his grip.
She rolled off the other side of the bed, dragging the sheet with her until she found his discarded white dress shirt on the floor. She shoved her arms through the oversized sleeves, rapidly buttoning it up over her bruised body with trembling fingers.
"You think because you have billions, everyone has a price tag?" She scooped her ruined silver clutch from the floor, shoving her cracked phone inside. "I am not your high-priced whore, Mr. Barnes."
Deven sat up against the mahogany headboard, completely unbothered by his own bare torso, watching her with dark, dangerous amusement.
"You walked out of a ballroom where your ex-fiancé traded you for a Barnes family investment," he noted coldly. "Outside this door, the Sanders family will bleed you dry. You have no money, no allies, and a dying grandmother."
Jenilee's hand froze on the brass door handle. Her knuckles whitened.
He already knew. Of course he did. A man like Deven probably had her entire genealogy memorized before dawn.
"I'd rather starve in the gutter than live in a golden cage built by an arrogant monster like you," she said, her voice shaking with fierce defiance.
She pulled the door open, stepped out into the private foyer, and slammed it behind her.
Deven didn't move. He sat in the silence of the massive penthouse, his thumb slowly tracing the bite mark on his lip.
A quiet knock sounded at the double doors.
Boyce, his chief of staff, stepped into the bedroom with a fresh three-piece suit hanging over his arm. The assistant kept his eyes glued strictly to the floor, pretending not to notice the shredded evening gown lying near the foot of the bed.
"Sir," Boyce said softly. "The car is ready downstairs."
Deven swung his legs over the edge of the mattress, standing tall, his back covered in long, faint red scratches.
"Get me everything on her," Deven ordered, his voice dropping into that chilling, lethal register that made boardrooms tremble. "Her debts, her family, her daily routine. Every breath she takes from this moment on, I want it on my desk in ten minutes."
"Yes, Mr. Barnes."
Down on 59th Street, Jenilee stumbled out of the hotel's delivery entrance into the chilly morning air.
She flagged down a yellow cab, practically collapsing into the ripped vinyl back seat.
"Where to, lady?" the driver asked, eyeing her oversized men's shirt and bare feet in the rearview mirror.
Before she could answer, her phone vibrated violently against her palm.
The caller ID flashed: Westchester Care Facility - Emergency.
Jenilee swiped the screen with a trembling thumb, pressing the device to her ear.
"Miss Albert?" a harsh, clinical voice barked over the line. "Your payment failed to clear at midnight. We have initiated the transfer protocols. If the fifty-thousand-dollar deposit is not paid in person within the hour, your grandmother's life support will be terminated."
