Chapter 2: Awakening of the Fenrir

The violet light faded from her eyes, leaving her shivering in the wreckage of her own consciousness. Evangeline blinked, the snow beneath her body no longer biting into her skin. It felt... lukewarm. Like a memory of winter rather than the reality of it.

"What is happening to me?" she whispered, her voice sounding raspy, vibrating with a resonance that wasn't hers.

She stood up, her limbs feeling light, almost liquid. The lace of her gown was shredded, hanging off her frame like gossamer, but she felt no chill. She reached out, touching the bark of the oak that had caught her fall. Her fingertips sank into the wood like it was soft clay.

"Okay, so I'm definitely not having a normal breakdown," she muttered, staring at her hand. "This is a 'check yourself into an asylum' level of weird."

A low, guttural growl vibrated through the trees. From the shadows, a creature emerged-not a wolf, but a jagged, frost-bitten beast with eyes like frozen embers. It was a rogue, a creature twisted by the harsh northern elements. It lunged, its speed a blur of gray fur and malice.

Evangeline didn't think; she reacted. She shoved her hands forward, expecting to be shredded. Instead, a shockwave of raw, violet kinetic force erupted from her palms.

"Hey! Back off, you oversized hairball!" she screamed.

The beast slammed into a tree, its bones snapping like dry twigs. It slumped to the ground, whimpering.

"Oh, crap. Did I just... did I do that?" She looked at her palms, which were still humming with a faint, pulsing light. "That was not in the brochure for being a social pariah."

She paced the clearing, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Great. I'm a freak, I'm an outcast, and now I'm a human wrecking ball. Maybe I can go back and ask Lucius if he wants to see a magic trick? No, scratch that. I'd rather eat dirt."

"You wouldn't be the first person to find that kind of power messy," a cool, amused voice drifted from the darkness.

Evangeline spun around, her fists glowing again. A man stepped into the moonlight. He was tall, wearing a heavy, fur-lined coat that looked like it cost more than her entire former life. He had silver-threaded hair and eyes that seemed to assess her value with cold, clinical precision.

"Who are you?" Evangeline demanded, bracing her feet. "And keep your distance, unless you want to end up like that rogue over there."

The man chuckled, a sound like gravel shifting under velvet. He didn't look threatened; he looked intrigued. "I'm Kenneth. Kenneth Frost. And I'd suggest putting the fireworks away, little wolf. You're radiating enough energy to signal every hunter within fifty miles."

"I'm not a wolf," she snapped, though her own confidence wavered. "I'm nothing. Or at least, I was."

Kenneth took a step closer, his eyes narrowing as he traced the faint violet lines still fading on her skin. "A Fenrir, here? In the South? That's like finding a diamond in a pile of ash."

"A what?" Evangeline asked, her brow furrowing. "Sounds like a bad brand of winter boots."

"It's a lineage that hasn't been seen in centuries," Kenneth said, stopping just a few feet away. The air around him felt crisp, sharp, and oddly intoxicating. "The Fenrir don't shift into wolves, girl. They are the masters of the primal force that wolves only mimic. You aren't a mistake. You're a weapon."

Evangeline scoffed, though her hands trembled. "Look, Mr. Fancy Coat, I'm just a girl who got dumped at the altar. I'm not interested in being a weapon or a project."

"I don't need you to be interested," Kenneth said, his gaze dropping to her exposed shoulders, then back to her eyes with a look that felt heavy, dangerous, and inexplicably promising. "I need you to work. I have a problem in the capital, and your particular brand of 'explosive potential' is exactly what I need to solve it."

"Work? You want to hire me?" she asked, genuinely baffled. "I have no experience in anything other than being a decorative bride."

"You have experience surviving," Kenneth replied, extending a gloved hand. "And right now, you have nowhere else to go. Come with me. I'll provide the shelter, the food, and the training you need to stop your own skin from burning. In exchange, you become my asset."

"And if I say no?"

Kenneth smirked, a dangerous, beautiful curve of his lips. "Then you stay in the woods until the next pack of rogues finds you, and we see if you can blast them all before you freeze to death. It's a very simple choice, really."

Evangeline looked at the dark, desolate woods behind her, then at the man who seemed to hold the secrets to her very existence. She sighed, her shoulders slumping.

"Fine," she whispered. "But if you try to put me on a leash, I'm blowing up your favorite coat."

Kenneth laughed, a genuine, mirthful sound. "Deal. Walk this way, then. Let's see what you're truly capable of, little spark."
