Chapter 3: Business and Blades

The transition from the biting, frozen silence of the woods to the neon-drenched, chaotic sprawl of the North's underground markets was a sensory assault. Kenneth moved through the crowd with the grace of a predator who owned the shadows, while Evangeline, still wearing the shredded remnants of her wedding dress under a heavy stolen cloak, stuck to his heels like a shadow.

"So, the 'great asset' has arrived," a voice drawled from the doorway of a dingy, iron-reinforced warehouse.

Morpheus Black stood leaning against the frame, a man whose skin looked like it had been carved from obsidian and polished with malice. He flicked a lit cigar into the gutter.

"Morpheus, play nice," Kenneth said, gesturing toward Evangeline. "She's not just an asset. She's the reason your shipments are actually going to make it across the pass without getting incinerated by the local rogues."

Morpheus looked her up and down, his gaze lingering far too long on the way the silk clung to her frame. "She looks like she belongs on a ballroom floor, not hauling contraband. You sure she isn't going to faint the moment she smells blood, boss?"

Evangeline stepped forward, the hum of violet energy prickling beneath her skin. She forced a mocking, jagged grin. "I've spent the last twenty-four hours being humiliated by a narcissist and almost dying in a ditch. Trust me, sugar, the smell of blood is the least of my concerns today. You have a problem, or are you just here to critique my wardrobe?"

Morpheus chuckled, a deep, vibrating sound. "She's got teeth. I like that."

"She's got a temper," Kenneth corrected, his eyes gleaming with a strange, possessive amusement as he stepped behind her, his hand resting briefly on the small of her back. The touch sent a jolt of static through her, making her breath hitch. "Keep her sharp, Morpheus. If the cargo is late, we all pay the price."

Kenneth vanished into the crowd, leaving Evangeline in the belly of the market. She turned to Morpheus, who was currently tapping a heavy metal crate.

"Alright, princess," Morpheus said, motioning to a group of hulking, scarred men hovering nearby. "These guys are the protection. They take their orders from me. You just sit pretty and make sure nothing touches the merchandise."

"I'm not a cheerleader, Morpheus," she snapped. "Tell your meatheads to back off. I work better without an audience."

A large, tattooed man with a jagged scar across his throat stepped forward, looming over her. "Listen here, little bride. We don't take orders from strays. You're just the escort to keep the heat off, so stand in the corner and try not to break a nail."

The man reached out to shove her, his hand heavy and smelling of stale ale.

Evangeline didn't even blink. She caught his wrist mid-air, the violet light igniting in her eyes. The air between them warped with heat.

"You know," she whispered, her voice dropping into a dangerous, harmonic vibration, "I've always hated being told what to do."

With a flick of her wrist, she sent a concentrated burst of kinetic force through the man's chest. He flew backward, crashing through a stack of wooden crates with a sickening splintering sound. He landed in a heap, groaning, his armor dented as if hit by a battering ram.

The rest of the thugs froze, their bravado evaporating in seconds.

Evangeline dusted off her hands, her violet eyes still flickering. "Anyone else feel like giving me some fashion advice?"

Morpheus stared at the wreckage, a slow, predatory grin spreading across his face. "Okay. Message received. She's the boss on this route."

"Damn right," she muttered, her heart racing with an adrenaline high that felt intoxicatingly addictive.

The next few hours were a blur of high-stakes logistics. She learned the rhythms of the North quickly-how to bribe the right guards, how to navigate the blind spots of the territorial sensors, and how to command respect through pure, unadulterated intimidation. By the time the final crate of silver-ore was delivered to the contact in the lower city, her pockets were lined with enough gold to make the palace life look like peasant work.

She leaned against the railing of the balcony overlooking the market, a glass of something strong and amber-colored in her hand. Kenneth materialized out of the dark, sliding in beside her. He looked at the chaos below, then down at her, his gaze intense and heated.

"You handled yourself well," he murmured, his voice a low vibration against her ear. He leaned in, his scent of frost and ozone enveloping her. "You looked... lethal. It was incredibly distracting."

Evangeline turned, finding him far too close for comfort. His eyes held a flicker of hunger that made her pulse jump. "Don't get used to it, Kenneth. I'm just here for the paycheck."

"Are you?" He brushed a stray lock of hair behind her ear, his fingers lingering on her jawline. "Because you seem to have taken to the violence rather naturally, little spark."

"It's easier than falling in love, I suppose," she retorted, her voice softening despite herself.

Before he could answer, one of his scouts sprinted onto the balcony, panting. "Boss! We've got a situation. A scouting party from the Southern pack-Lucius's pack-crossed the border. They're claiming territory in the Northern valley."

The glass in Evangeline's hand shattered. The amber liquid pooled on the floor, but she didn't notice. The name hit her like a physical blow, cold and sharp.

"Lucius," she whispered, the violet light in her eyes surging, casting long, haunting shadows against the warehouse walls. "He's coming here?"

Kenneth's jaw tightened, his expression hardening into something truly predatory. "It seems your ex-fiancé has a death wish. Don't worry, Evie. We'll make sure he realizes the North has a new queen."

Evangeline tightened her grip on the iron railing, her knuckles turning white. The game had just changed from surviving to a war for her own survival. And she was ready to burn everything down to win.
