The car pulled away before Lena had fully closed the door - not rushed, not dramatic, just smooth and controlled, like everything about the man sitting beside her. Within seconds the studio disappeared behind them: the flashing cameras, the reporters, the voices calling her name, the place where Derek Cole had destroyed six years of her life in front of millions of people. Gone.

Lena sat silently, her clutch resting on her knees, staring through the window at the passing city lights.

"Where are we going?" she finally asked.

"Somewhere quiet." Callum's voice was calm. Almost too calm. "Unless you would rather go home."

Home. The word should have comforted her. Instead it felt like a stranger's word - because home was a penthouse full of memories of a marriage that no longer existed, a place where Derek's clothes still hung in the closet, where lawyers had probably already prepared papers to remove her from his life.

"I don't want to go home."

Callum didn't ask why. "Somewhere quiet, then."

The silence returned. Lena watched the numbers on the dashboard without meaning to. Four minutes. That was how long Derek had spoken before ending their marriage. Four minutes to erase six years. Four minutes for the world to see her as the abandoned wife.

She looked at the man beside her. Callum Voss. Everyone in their world knew his name - Derek's biggest competitor, the man who'd built an empire powerful enough to challenge his.

"You were there," Lena said.

Callum looked toward the window. "At the studio? Private box. Second level."

"Why?"

"Derek invited me. A business courtesy." He paused. "Six weeks ago."

"And you came."

"I wanted to see something."

"What?"

His eyes met hers, direct and uncomfortably honest. "Whether you were the person your father believed you were."

The words hit harder than she expected. Before she could respond, the car stopped in front of a quiet, elegant hotel - not the kind of place people went to be seen, but the kind people went when they didn't want anyone watching.

Minutes later they sat in a private corner of the bar. A waiter brought two drinks; Lena didn't remember ordering hers, and ignored it.

"My father," she said. "Tell me how you knew him."

Callum leaned back. "Geneva, 2019. A business conference. We were introduced after dinner."

"And you became friends?"

"No." He looked at his glass. "We became two people who recognized something in each other. He was careful. Your father didn't trust easily."

That sounded exactly like James Hart.

"He told me about Derek."

Her body went still. "How much?"

"Enough to know something was wrong. He didn't have proof yet - he was still investigating. But your father wasn't a man who ignored patterns."

No, he wasn't. Her father had always believed the small things mattered, the details other people overlooked.

"He asked you for help?"

"No," Callum corrected. "He asked me to be available. Your father understood the difference."

Lena almost smiled. That was her father. Precise, always precise.

"He died before he needed you."

"Yes."

"And you waited?"

"I watched."

The answer sent a strange chill through her. "For three years?"

"Yes."

Three years of Derek building his empire, smiling on television, using her father's connections while pretending he'd created everything himself.

"What did my father say about me?"

Callum was quiet a moment. "He said you were the most capable person he knew." A pause. "And that you were living like you'd forgotten it."

The words found the exact place she'd been hiding from herself, because they were true. She'd spent years making herself smaller - supporting Derek, protecting his image, making excuses - until she'd forgotten who she was before she became Mrs. Cole.

"The files," she said.

Callum's attention sharpened. "You know about them."

"Your father told me they existed."

"Not what was inside?"

"No." Lena looked at him. "I've read everything."

For the first time, something changed in Callum's expression. Not surprise. Interest.

"And?"

She swallowed. "Derek built his career using my father's reputation. He stole opportunities. Buried evidence. Covered up a harassment complaint." Her voice stayed steady. "And he had divorce papers prepared before tonight."

Callum didn't react, but she saw confirmation in his eyes.

"The pregnancy wasn't planned."

"No."

"You knew?"

"I saw his reaction. Derek Cole controls everything." His voice lowered. "When Sienna announced it, he lost control for half a second. That half second told me everything."

Lena remembered his hand tightening around Sienna's - the calculation, the shock, the fear.

"So what happens now?"

"Now Derek tries to rebuild his story."

"And we stop him?"

"No." The answer surprised her. "We make sure he cannot."

The confidence in his voice should have frightened her. Instead, for the first time all night, Lena felt something close to hope.

Then Callum placed a folder on the table.

"What is that?"

"An offer." She didn't touch it. "What kind of offer?"

"A marriage contract."

The room seemed to go quieter.

"Excuse me?"

"Twelve months. You become my wife publicly. I give you access to my resources - my lawyers, my investigators, everything you need to finish what your father started."

"You want to marry me?"

"Temporarily."

"Why?"

"Because Derek Cole understands power." He leaned forward slightly. "And tomorrow morning, when the world sees you standing beside me, he'll understand that losing you was the biggest mistake he ever made."

The words should have sounded like revenge. Maybe they were. But Lena also heard something else - a chance. A way to stop being the woman everyone pitied.

She looked at the contract, then at Callum. "I have one condition."

"Name it."

"The evidence. My father's files - what happens to them, and when they're released, will be my decision."

Callum didn't hesitate. "Agreed."

She studied him: a powerful man, a stranger, the enemy of her husband, the only person who seemed to know exactly what Derek had done.

"Prepare the papers."

"Tonight?"

She stood. "Before midnight."

Because six hours ago, Lena Hart had been Derek Cole's wife. Now she was something else. And she was ready to find out exactly what.
