Patrick Osei arrived twenty-two minutes later. Lena noticed the time without meaning to — she'd been doing that all night, counting, measuring, holding on to small things because the bigger ones were too large to understand. Twenty-two minutes since Callum made the offer. Twenty-two minutes since she agreed to marry a stranger. Twenty-two minutes since her old life ended and something new began.

The man who walked through the door looked exactly like someone Callum Voss would hire — perfect suit, calm expression, briefcase already prepared, no surprise at the late hour, no hesitation about the situation. He simply placed the documents on the table and began.

Lena noticed immediately: the contract already existed. It hadn't been drawn up after her decision. It had been waiting. Callum had been prepared before tonight.

"You planned this," she said.

Callum didn't deny it. "I prepared for possibilities."

"Like me?"

"Like Derek."

The answer was honest enough that she didn't push. Not yet.

She opened the contract and read every page, every clause, every word. Patrick watched quietly as she studied the agreement, and she could almost see him adjusting his opinion of her — maybe he'd expected a devastated woman desperate for revenge, or someone grateful enough to accept anything. He was wrong. Lena Hart had spent six years standing beside a powerful man. She'd learned how power worked, and she wasn't about to enter another arrangement without protecting herself.

Forty minutes later, she placed the document on the table. "I want changes."

Patrick nodded. "Of course."

"The evidence stays mine. The USB files, the timing, the release, the decisions." Her voice stayed steady. "No Voss employee, lawyer, or company representative touches anything unless I approve it."

Patrick typed the amendment. Callum said nothing.

"The second change. I want an account in my name, separate from everything connected to this marriage." She met Callum's eyes. "I need to know I can leave whenever I choose."

Something unreadable passed through his expression. Then he nodded. "Agreed."

The third clause was the one that made him pause. "If either person develops feelings that interfere with the agreement, we say it."

Silence. Patrick stopped typing. Callum looked at the sentence.

"That is unusual."

Lena gave a small, humorless smile. "I've already spent six years married to someone who hid the truth. I'm not doing that again."

Callum studied her, then nodded. "Agreed."

The final version was signed before midnight. Not a promise. Not a love story. A contract. That was easier — or so Lena told herself.

The registrar's office was nothing like her first wedding. No flowers, no orchestra, no expensive decorations chosen for photographs — just white walls, fluorescent lights, and a room that smelled faintly of cleaning products. Two witnesses stood nearby: Patrick Osei, and Clara, Callum's assistant, a woman who seemed capable of arranging anything without making it look difficult.

The officiant read the legal words, and Lena listened. She'd heard them before. Seven years ago she'd stood in a beautiful venue wearing a dress chosen after months of planning, believing she was beginning forever. Tonight she stood beneath harsh lights wearing the same day's dress and a future she hadn't imagined.

When the officiant reached the important part, he looked at her. "Do you, Lena James Hart, take Callum Richard Voss as your lawful husband?"

She looked at Callum. He was already looking at her — no performance, no fake tenderness, no audience to impress. Just honesty.

"I do."

Then it was his turn. "I do."

The words were simple. The consequences were not.

"You are now married."

Lena looked down at the ring — a simple platinum band, nothing dramatic, nothing designed to make strangers jealous. Nothing like Derek's diamond, chosen because it looked impressive. This one felt different. Quiet. Practical. Real.

"There will be a photographer outside," Callum said softly. "Three pictures."

"Fine."

"You don't have to smile."

"I know." And she didn't.

The photograph should have been ordinary — three seconds, three clicks, a woman leaving a building beside a man. But nothing about Lena Hart's life was ordinary anymore.

It spread before she even woke up. Not because of Callum, not because of a planned announcement, but because someone outside had recognized her: the woman humiliated on live television, the abandoned wife, the woman everyone expected to break. By four in the morning, hundreds of thousands had shared it. By five, millions had seen it. One caption spread faster than anything else:

She didn't cry. She upgraded.

Derek Cole saw the photograph at six-oh-four in the morning. His publicist's call woke him — not that he'd been sleeping. Not after Sienna's announcement, not after realizing she'd hijacked the entire direction of his carefully planned broadcast, not after understanding that, for the first time in years, someone else had taken control of his story.

"Derek." His publicist's voice was tense. "We have a situation."

Derek opened the link. Then he froze.

Lena. Standing beside Callum Voss. A ring on her finger. A look on her face he'd never seen before — not sadness, not heartbreak, not the quiet acceptance she'd shown throughout their marriage. Something else. Something stronger.

For six years Derek had known exactly who Lena was — or thought he did. The woman who supported him. The woman who stayed silent. The woman who would never embarrass him. But the woman in that photograph, he didn't recognize. And that frightened him more than anger would have, because anger could be controlled, pain could be used. This looked like a woman who had stopped needing him.

Derek closed the image and opened his phone. "Gerald."

His lawyer answered.

"We have a problem." Derek stared at the photograph again. "Find out everything about Callum Voss." A pause. "And find out what Lena knows."
