The heavy thrum of the medical evacuation helicopter had shaken the rooftop landing pad of the private Klinik Hirslanden in Zurich. Jarett Rush had escorted Aurelia through the emergency bay, his expression a mask of rehearsed concern as he fired off text messages to the Beaumont family fixers.

Within hours, a convoy of armored Maybachs had screeched to a halt outside the clinic's private entrance. Giles Beaumont, the terrifying patriarch of the Beaumont empire, strode through the sliding glass doors, his long wool coat sweeping behind him like a storm cloud. Beside him was his wife, Danelle, her face pale and etched with maternal panic.

Aurelia's injury wasn't life-threatening—a severe fracture of the distal radius that required surgical pinning—but to Danelle, it was a crisis of the highest order. She rushed into the VIP recovery suite the moment the doctors allowed it, fussing over Aurelia's pale face, adjusting her blankets, and demanding the nursing staff bring better pain management options.

Giles, however, had remained in the corridor to speak with the chief orthopedic surgeon.

"The surgery was a complete success, Mr. Beaumont," the surgeon said in precise English, holding a digital tablet. "We have stabilized the bone. However, as part of our standard pre-operative protocol, we ran a comprehensive blood panel to prepare for any potential transfusions."

Giles adjusted his cuffs, his steel-gray eyes cold and impatient. "And? Was there an issue?"

"No issue with the supply, sir," the surgeon replied smoothly. "Miss Beaumont is Type A. We had plenty of compatible units on standby, though they were ultimately unnecessary."

Giles froze. His hands, which had been adjusting his expensive watch, stopped moving entirely. The muscles along his jaw twitched.

Type A.

Giles Beaumont was Type B. His wife, Danelle, was pure Type O.

Giles was a man who dealt in absolute facts and infallible data. He knew the basic laws of human genetics. A Type B parent and a Type O parent could only produce a child with Type B or Type O blood. It was a biological, undeniable impossibility for them to produce a child with Type A blood.

The pristine, temperature-controlled hospital corridor suddenly felt like it was dropping below freezing. Giles slowly lowered his hands, his eyes narrowing into dangerous, calculating slits.

"I see," Giles said, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly flat cadence, entirely devoid of warmth. "Thank you, Doctor. Ensure she has whatever she needs for a full recovery."

The surgeon bowed and hurried away, completely unaware of the nuclear bomb he had just detonated.

Giles turned his back to the bustling nurses' station. He looked through the reinforced observation glass into the suite. Danelle was sitting on the edge of the bed, gently stroking Aurelia's hair as the girl whined about the hospital food. For twenty-five years, Giles had given Aurelia the world—private jets, limitless credit lines, board seats, and his absolute protection.

Now, looking at her petulant face, he felt a cold, terrifying void open in his chest.

He didn't say a word to Danelle. He walked thirty feet down the hall to an unmonitored alcove overlooking the snowy Zurich streets, pulled his encrypted satellite phone from his pocket, and pressed a single speed-dial key.

"Fleming," Giles commanded the instant his son answered in New York.

"Yes, Father. How is Aurelia?"

"Aurelia is fine," Giles said, his voice rumbling with lethal intensity. "But I need you to drop everything you are doing. Go to St. Jude Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Pull every birth record, nurse log, and incubator manifest from October twenty-fifth, twenty-five years ago. I want to know exactly who was in that maternity ward."
