Danielle Phelps POV:
The wooden door at the far end of the basement corridor rattled on its rusted hinges as I shoved it closed.
The air down here was thick with mold, mildew, and decades of forgotten dust. This was the room the Savage family had prepared for my return—a windowless utility closet next to the boiler, crammed with broken patio furniture and empty chemical drums.
I slid the rusted deadbolt into place.
The moment the lock clicked, all the strength drained from my body. My good leg gave out, and I slid down the damp concrete wall, hitting the cold floor with a dull thud.
My right knee was swollen to twice its normal size. The broken silver pin had torn through the outer layer of skin, exposing a jagged sliver of dark metal. Around the wound, the flesh had turned an unnatural, bruised charcoal color where the silver's toxicity was eating away at the living cells.
With trembling, blood-caked fingers, I unzipped the hidden interior lining of my canvas duffel bag.
Tucked deep inside was a flat roll of oiled leather. I unrolled it carefully on my lap, revealing twelve slender needles made of ancient, hand-forged silver alloy, each engraved with microscopic runes of vitality.
This was the legacy of my master, Honora Blair—the legendary Grand Healer who had spent five years locked in the lowest dungeon of the detention center with me. She had taught me the lost art of meridian needlework, a secret technique capable of redirecting bio-currents, clearing toxic silver blockages, and forcing broken bodies to repair themselves.
I drew a ragged breath, pulled three long needles from the leather sheath, and positioned them over the primary pressure points surrounding my shattered knee joint.
Without hesitation, I drove the first needle two inches deep into the flesh above the kneecap.
A sharp jolt of white-hot pressure flared, followed immediately by a wave of soothing, icy numbness. I placed the second and third needles into the nerve clusters along the outer tendon, twisting them slightly to lock the bio-pathways.
The burning agony of the silver poisoning instantly receded, replaced by a cold, quiet stillness. My hidden white wolf bloodline—a divine heritage dormant beneath my skin—silently began to seal the ruptured capillaries.
Heavy, hurried footsteps paused right outside my door.
"Danielle... are you in there?" Camryn's voice came through the thin wood, sounding strained and hesitant.
I kept my hands steady on the needles, not even bothering to open my eyes. "Get lost."
A heavy sigh rattled the wood. "Danielle, open the mind-link. Talk to me inside the link where no one can hear us."
His mental voice grazed the outer edges of my consciousness. In our world, the Mind-Link was a telepathic network exclusive to pack members who carried an active inner wolf. It required an intentional mental push to open, but because everyone believed I was a wolfless cripple, my mind was supposed to be a blank void.
His mental projection slammed into my mental barrier and bounced back like an iron ball hitting a bank vault.
"Dammit... I forgot you don't have a wolf," Camryn muttered aloud outside, his voice laced with irritation and pity. "Open the door, Danielle. I brought you a regeneration ointment from the Knox medical labs."
"Take your charity and rub it on your new bitch," I said, pulling a fourth needle and sliding it beneath the bone to immobilize the broken pin. "Get off my floor."
"Why do you have to be so stubborn?" Camryn kicked the bottom of the door, shaking dust from the ceiling rafters. "Kacey brings the support of the Cabrera financial syndicate! She secures my seat as the next CEO of Knox Holdings! What could you have offered me? A lifetime of shame as the mate of a wolfless convict?"
"I'm offering you the chance to walk away before I lose my temper," I answered coldly.
I pulled a strip of clean linen from my bag and wrapped my knee tightly, binding the metal fragment firmly against the bone. The pain was completely blocked by the needles, but my head spun from the sheer amount of blood I had lost upstairs.
Silence hung outside the door for nearly a minute.
"You'll regret this, Danielle," Camryn said, his tone turning venomous. "In this metropolis, an unshifted female with no pack backing is prey for the rogues. Without me, you won't survive six months."
His footsteps faded down the hall and up the stairs.
I leaned my head back against the concrete, letting out a breath that tasted like iron. Protection? I had survived five years in a maximum-security silver dungeon. I didn't need a coward's shelter.
I grabbed the edge of a rusty metal shelf and pulled myself to my feet. The needles held my joint stable, allowing me to stand without collapsing.
Click.
The deadbolt shifted from the outside. The door swung open, and the dim yellow light of the hallway spilled into the closet.
Kacey stood in the doorway.
She had changed out of her torn silk gown into a lavender satin pajama set. Her face was completely free of tears, her swollen cheek already calmed by high-grade healing packs. In her manicured hands, she carried a dented stainless steel tray.
"Were you sleeping, dear sister?" she purred, stepping inside and kicking the door shut behind her.
A rancid, sour stench immediately filled the small room.
On the tray sat a bowl of gray, congealed mush covered in moldy bread crusts and sour milk—the scraps fed to the lowest omega kennel hounds, food that even stray mutts would avoid.
Kacey slammed the tray down onto the rusted utility table, her green eyes flashing with malice. "Eat up. Bryant told the kitchen staff to prepare a special welcome-home dinner just for you."
