Dawn came slowly, gray and cold, seeping through the cracks in the panic room's walls like water. Scarla had stopped crying hours ago. Now she just sat on the cold floor, her back against the concrete, her knees drawn up to her chest. Kennedy sat across from her, his eyes fixed on the door, his body coiled with tension. Neither of them had slept.
"We need a plan," he said finally. "We can't stay here forever."
"I know." She pressed her palms to her eyes. "But what can we do? He's destroyed everything. The villa, the communications and the boats."
"He hasn't destroyed us." She looked up at him. "How do you know?"
"Because we're still breathing." His voice was flat and determined. "And as long as we're breathing, we can fight."
She stared at him. There was something different about him now, something that had shifted since the collapse. The arrogant billionaire who'd spent three days trading barbs with her was gone. In his place was a man who'd been fighting for survival his whole life.
"Tell me about him," she said. "Tell me about Cipher."
Kennedy was silent for a long moment. Then he moved to sit beside her, his shoulder brushing hers.
"We grew up together," he said. "Same mother, different fathers. He was older, smarter and more ambitious." He laughed, but there was no humor in it. "He was supposed to be the one who inherited everything. The company, the legacy and the future."
"What happened?"
"He destroyed it." Kennedy's voice was flat. "Bad investments and shady deals. He ran the company into the ground before I was old enough to understand what was happening. By the time I took over, there was almost nothing left."
"But you saved it."
"I rebuilt it." He met her eyes. "From nothing, from debt, from the wreckage he left behind and he's never forgiven me for it."
Scarla reached out, her hand finding his. "That's not your fault."
"I know." He squeezed her hand. "But he doesn't see it that way. In his mind, I stole everything from him including the mother who loved him more than me."
"She loved you both." She said, "No." His voice cracked. "She loved him. She never forgave me for being better, for being stronger and for surviving when everything around us was falling apart." She turned to face him fully. "You don't believe that, do you?"
He didn't answer because he couldn't. "Kennedy." She reached up, touching his cheek. "You're not responsible for your mother's choices. You're not responsible for Cipher's choices. You're only responsible for your own." His eyes searched hers. "How do you always know what to say?"
"I don't." She smiled, a small, broken thing. "I'm just making it up as I go along." He laughed. This time it was a real laugh, surprised and warm, and it transformed his face. "Come on," he said, pulling her to her feet. "We need to find a way out of here."
---
The passage was hidden behind a panel in the panic room's wall. Kennedy had built it himself, years ago, a secret escape route that no one else knew existed.
"How did you know you'd need this?" Scarla asked as they descended into the darkness. "I didn't." His voice echoed in the narrow space. "But I've learned to prepare for the worst. I've been preparing my whole life."
She followed him through the darkness, her hand in his, her heart pounding. The passage was narrow and damp, the walls rough with age. She could hear water dripping somewhere in the distance, could feel the cold seeping through her thin nightgown.
"How much further?" she asked. "Not far." He squeezed her hand. "The passage leads to the caves below the villa. From there, we can reach the mainland."
"The mainland? That's miles away." "I know." He glanced back at her. "But it's our only option. Cipher's destroyed everything else."
She nodded, not trusting her voice. She was exhausted, hurting, terrified but she kept moving. One foot in front of the other. She always remembered-Vences didn't break. They bent, they survived, they lied but maybe-just maybe-they could also learn to trust.
---
The caves were dark and vast, the sound of waves crashing against rocks echoing through the chamber. Scarla could see the faint light of dawn filtering through a narrow opening in the ceiling.
"We're close," Kennedy said. "Just a little further."
She followed him across the uneven floor, her feet raw and bleeding. Her ribs screamed with every breath. Her arm throbbed where she'd landed on it but she didn't stop.
Finally, they emerged onto a narrow ledge overlooking the sea. The Mediterranean stretched out before them, calm and endless and impossibly blue. The storm had passed, leaving behind a sky streaked with pale gray and pink.
Scarla sank to her knees, her whole body trembling. She'd made it, they'd made it. "Scarla." Kennedy knelt beside her, his hand on her back. "We're safe. We're out." She looked at him, tears streaming down her face. "He's still out there. He's still going to come for us."
"I know." His voice was grim. "But at least now we have a fighting chance."
"How? We have nothing. No weapons, no communications and no way to get help." Kennedy reached into his pocket, pulling out a small device. It was a satellite phone, battered and old, but intact.
"I always carry a backup," he said. "I learned that lesson the hard way." She stared at him. "You had this the whole time?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you use it earlier?"
"Because I needed to get us out first." He met her eyes. "If I'd used it in the villa, Cipher would have found us. He's been tracking our signals."
"But he won't find us now?"
Kennedy's smile was cold. "Not here. Not in these caves. I built this escape route to be invisible." She watched as he powered on the phone, waiting for a signal. The device beeped, a weak but steady connection.
"I'm calling for help," he said. "We'll be off this island within hours." Scarla closed her eyes, letting herself hope for the first time. "Thank you," she whispered. He turned to her, his eyes soft. "For what?"
"For trusting me, for believing me and for not walking away." He reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "I told you, Scarla. I'm not going anywhere." She leaned into his touch, her eyes closing and after a long traumatic experience, she finally felt safe.
