The door opened, and four men emerged, all dressed in black tactical gear. They were armed, their weapons gleaming in the pale morning light.

"Cipher's men," she breathed. Kennedy nodded, his jaw tight. "He knew we'd try to escape. He was waiting for us."

"What do we do?"

"We fight." He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small knife. "I found this in the passage. It's not much, but it's all we have." She stared at the blade. "That's it? That's all we have?"

"It's enough." His eyes blazed with determination. "Stay behind me. Don't move, not even a sound."

She nodded, her heart pounding. The men were spreading out, searching the beach, heading toward the cave entrance. "Stay close," Kennedy whispered. "And whatever happens, don't stop running."

---

The first man came through the cave entrance before she was ready. He was tall and broad, his face hidden behind a tactical mask. He moved silently, his weapon sweeping the cave. Kennedy struck before he could react. The knife flashed, and the man crumpled, his weapon clattering to the ground.

Kennedy grabbed the gun, his movements fluid and practiced. "Come on," he said. "We need to move." She followed him through the cave, her heart hammering. Behind them, she could hear the other men shouting, their voices echoing through the chamber.

"Scarla." Kennedy grabbed her arm, pulling her behind a rock formation. "Stay here. Don't move until I come back."

"What are you doing?"

"I'm going to draw them away." He met her eyes. "I'll be back. I promise." She grabbed his arm. "No. You can't. You'll be killed."

"I won't." His hand cupped her cheek. "I survived Cipher and the collapse. I'm not dying today."

"Kennedy-"

"Trust me." His eyes searched hers. "Please."

She wanted to argue, to fight and beg him to stay but she looked into his eyes and saw something she hadn't seen before. Something fierce and determined and utterly convinced. "Okay," she said. "I trust you."

He kissed her-a brief, desperate kiss that said everything words couldn't. Then he was gone, disappearing into the darkness. She pressed herself behind the rock, her heart pounding. She could hear gunfire in the distance. He could hear shouting and everything she was afraid to hear.

Even then silence could be heard.

She waited, counting the seconds, each one an eternity. One minute, then two, then three. Then Kennedy appeared, his face streaked with dirt and blood. He was holding a second weapon, his eyes blazing with triumph. "They're gone," he said. "For now."

She threw herself into his arms, her whole body shaking. "I thought-I thought you were dead."

"I'm not." He held her tight. "I told you. I'm not dying today."

---

They ran through the caves, following the passage to its end. The exit led to a small cove, hidden from view by a rock formation. "There's a boat here," Kennedy said. "I hid it years ago for emergencies."

He pulled the tarp off, revealing a small but sturdy vessel. It had an engine, fuel, everything they needed. "Get in," he said. "We're getting off this island."

She climbed into the boat, her hands shaking. Kennedy started the engine, guiding the vessel out of the cove.

The island receded behind them, growing smaller and smaller until it was just a dot on the horizon.

Scarla looked back, her eyes burning. "Where are we going?" she asked.

"Away." Kennedy's voice was flat. "Somewhere he can't find us."

"Where can't he find us?"

He was silent for a long moment. Then he met her eyes. "My place. The one place he doesn't know about. The one place he's never been able to find."

She stared at him. "And where is that?"

"In the mountains. In Italy, a small village where no one knows who I am." She was silent, processing. "Will we be safe there?"

"Safer than anywhere else." He reached out, taking her hand. "I promise you, Scarla. We'll be safe there."

She looked down at their joined hands, at the man who'd saved her life, at the future that stretched out before them. "Okay," she said. "Let's go."
