The Substitute Wife's Ruthless Comeback

Available on Beidou

Clara dug her heels into the runner rug, fighting against every inch of Derek's pull.

Her fingers caught the carved brass baluster of the grand staircase, her knuckles turning stark white as she locked her grip.

"Mrs. Montgomery, making a scene will only make the procedure more difficult," Derek said, his tone entirely professional even as he pried at her fingers.

Clara didn't hesitate. She threw her head down and sank her teeth deep into the fleshy part of Derek's hand between his thumb and forefinger.

The metallic taste of warm blood flooded her mouth.

Derek grunted in pain, his grip loosening just enough for Clara to wrench her arm free. She stumbled forward, throwing herself down the sweeping oak staircase.

"Stop her!" Derek yelled from above, clutching his bleeding hand.

At the base of the stairs, two hulking security guards in black suits stepped into formation, blocking the double front doors like an impenetrable brick wall.

Clara skidded to a halt on the fifth step from the bottom.

Her chest heaved. Sweat soaked the collar of her thin silk nightgown, sticking the fabric to her skin. Behind her, Derek was already descending the stairs, his face dark with irritation.

She reached up with trembling fingers, yanked the sharp silver hairpin from her messy updo, and pressed the pointed tip directly against her carotid artery.

"Don't come any closer!"

Her voice cracked, raw and feral.

"Take one more step, and I'll end it right here! You can explain a dead body on the foyer floor to the police!"

The two guards froze, exchanging an uneasy glance. They were hired to handle discreet corporate security, not clean up an open suicide in a billionaire's entry hall.

Derek paused on the steps above her, his eyes cold behind his glasses.

From the top of the landing, the study door clicked open again.

Dominic walked out onto the mezzanine, the glass of amber scotch resting loosely in his right hand. He looked down through the wrought-iron railings at the desperate woman holding a spike to her own neck.

"Do it," Dominic said.

The silence that followed was deafening.

"If you want to bleed out on my staircase, go ahead," he continued, taking a slow sip from his glass. "It saves me the clinic fee. But that fetus dies today, in this house or at the clinic."

The absolute indifference in his tone shattered whatever fragile piece of Clara's soul remained intact. Her hand shuddered. The hairpin slipped, slicing a thin, bright line of crimson across her pale throat.

Derek didn't waste the distraction.

He dropped down two steps, his forearm chopping down across Clara's wrist with brutal precision. The silver hairpin clattered against the marble floor below.

Before she could scream, the two guards lunged upward. They caught her by the elbows, twisting her arms behind her back and lifting her completely off her feet.

"Get her to the car," Derek ordered, pulling a clean handkerchief from his jacket to wrap around his bitten hand.

They dragged her through the heavy side doors into the biting autumn wind.

A black Cadillac Escalade sat idling on the gravel driveway, exhaust fuming into the cold night air. The rear door was already pulled wide.

The guards shoved her into the leather interior. Clara curled into a tight ball against the door panel, her arms wrapping around her stomach as if her fragile ribs could form an impenetrable shield.

Derek slid into the front passenger seat.

"Upper East Side clinic," Derek told the driver. "Tell Dr. Sterling we're ten minutes out."

The SUV surged forward, tires grinding against the crushed gravel before hitting the smooth asphalt of the private estate road.

Clara stared out the tinted window as the iron gates of the Montgomery Estate swept past. Streetlights flickered across her tear-streaked face in rhythmic bursts of amber and shadow. The silence inside the vehicle was suffocating, broken only by her ragged, shallow breaths.

Ten minutes later, the SUV descended a concrete ramp into a sterile, underground private parking structure in Manhattan.

The rear doors flew open.

Fluorescent lights blinded Clara for a second. Two nurses wearing surgical masks and sterile blue scrubs were waiting beside a stainless steel wheelchair.

"Restraints," Derek said as he stepped out.

"No! Get your hands off me!"

Clara lashed out with her legs, but the nurses were practiced. They forced her down into the wheelchair, locking wide leather straps across her wrists and ankles. The coarse material bit into her skin, leaving burning red friction marks.

"This is illegal! You cannot perform a medical procedure without my consent!"

A senior nurse approached from the side, a pre-filled syringe gleaming in the harsh light.

"Just a mild sedative to help you relax, Mrs. Montgomery."

The cold needle plunged into Clara's deltoid muscle.

A heavy, icy numbness rushed through her veins almost instantly. Her limbs grew leaden, her frantic struggles slowing to sluggish twitches. The edges of her vision began to smear and dissolve into grey static.

The wheelchair was shoved through a set of automated double doors into an operating room.

Above her, the round, blinding glare of a surgical lamp flared to life. The sharp clatter of stainless steel speculums and suction tubes echoed off the tiled walls.

A surgeon in full surgical gear stepped up between her strapped legs, his eyes completely devoid of emotion above his blue mask.

Clara closed her eyes. Hot tears slipped sideways into her hair. In that freezing room, strapped down like an animal, the last ember of love she had harbored for Dominic over the past three years went completely cold.

The surgeon reached for a metal dilator.

Suddenly, a piercing, high-pitched alarm shrieked from the hallway.

It wasn't a standard fire alarm. It was the distinct, rhythmic warble of an encrypted medical telemetry monitor linked directly to the main estate's critical care wing.

The operating room doors banged open against the wall.

Derek stood in the doorway, the tablet in his hand flashing bright red, his usually composed face pale with sudden panic.

"Stop the procedure! Halt everything right now!"

The surgeon froze, the cold metal instrument hovering inches from Clara's body.

Derek pressed his wireless earpiece tightly against his ear, his voice tight.

"Miss Bloom's vitals just crashed. Mr. Montgomery is already on his way back to the estate."
