The operating room descended into chaotic stillness.
The surgeon dropped the dilator onto the stainless steel tray with a sharp clatter, quickly stripping off his sterile latex gloves.
"Keep the patient stable," the doctor barked at the two nurses before rushing toward the door behind Derek. "If Miss Bloom is arresting, I need the central cardiac unit online immediately."
Derek didn't spare Clara a single glance. He spun on his heel and sprinted down the corridor, his heavy footsteps fading into the distance.
The two nurses in the room turned their backs, hurriedly resetting the telemetry monitors to link with the estate's emergency feed.
Clara pulled against the fog of the sedative in her brain.
The drug made her thoughts feel thick, like wading through deep water, but the adrenaline spiking through her heart fought back the haze. She twisted her left wrist violently against the leather restraint.
The buckle had been fastened in a rush. Sweat and blood from her chafed skin acted as a lubricant. With a sharp, agonizing pull that scraped off a layer of skin, her left hand slipped free.
She didn't waste a second.
Clara reached down with her free hand, snapping open the buckles on her right wrist and both ankles. She rolled off the operating table, her bare feet hitting the freezing floor tiles. Her knees buckled under the lingering weight of the sedative, and she crashed hard against the base of an instrument stand.
The metal tray rattled.
The senior nurse spun around, her eyes widening behind her mask.
"Hey! What are you doing—"
Clara grabbed a pair of long, heavy surgical shears from the dropped tray. She scrambled to her feet, holding the pointed steel tip outward, aiming directly at the nurse's throat.
Her arm shook, but her gaze was dead, lethal, and unyielding.
"Don't make a sound."
Clara's voice was a ragged whisper, but the pure desperation in her posture made both nurses freeze where they stood, raising their hands slowly.
"Step back against the wall. Now."
The nurses backed away slowly, their scrubs rustling in the quiet room.
Clara reached behind her with her left hand, found the heavy deadbolt on the operating room's interior exit, and slammed it home. She grabbed a white lab coat hanging from a wall hook, wrapping it tightly over her torn nightgown.
She didn't use the main hallway. Instead, she pushed through the heavy red door marked for medical waste disposal, plunging into the dimly lit service stairwell.
She ran down three flights of concrete stairs, each step jarring her aching muscles, and burst through an emergency fire exit into the freezing rain of an Upper East Side alleyway.
The icy downpour hit her face, washing away the last traces of the sedative.
Clara ran barefoot across two blocks of slick asphalt, her feet numb to the jagged debris on the pavement, before collapsing against the side of an idling yellow cab at the corner of 72nd Street.
She banged her bloody palm against the passenger window.
The driver rolled it down an inch, startled.
"Kensington Manor," Clara gasped, her teeth chattering so hard they clicked. "Across the Virginia line. I have jewelry to pay you. Please... just drive."
She threw her gold wedding band—the plain band Dominic had forced on her without a ceremony—onto the passenger seat.
The driver took one look at her bloodied hands, the frantic terror in her eyes, and the luxury gold band. He unlocked the door.
Two hours later, the yellow cab rolled through the heavy wrought-iron gates of the Kensington estate.
Unlike the sleek, modern fortress of Dominic's compound, Kensington Manor was a centuries-old brick monolith surrounded by ancient oaks, built on old money and untouchable political pedigree. It was the private residence of Victoria Montgomery, Dominic's mother and the sole matriarch of the family line.
Clara stumbled out of the cab into the mud.
She ran up the grand stone steps and beat her fists against the heavy oak front doors.
"Let me in! Please! I need to see Madam Victoria!"
The doors creaked open five minutes later.
Victoria stood in the grand entrance hall, wrapped in a floor-length charcoal cashmere shawl, her silver-streaked hair swept into an immaculate chignon. Her hand rested on the polished handle of an antique silver-topped walking cane.
She looked down at Clara, who was kneeling in the rain, soaked, shivering, and covered in dried blood and bruises.
Victoria's sharp eyes dropped instantly to the way Clara's arms remained wrapped defensively over her lower stomach.
"Mother..." Clara choked out, the word tearing from her raw throat as she collapsed against the stone sill. "Dominic is trying to kill my baby. Please. Protect your grandchild."
Victoria's jaw tightened. She tapped her silver cane once against the hardwood floor.
"Bring her inside," Victoria commanded her staff. "Draw a hot bath and call Dr. Evans immediately."
Inside the warm sitting room, wrapped in dry wool blankets with a cup of hot broth in her hands, Clara's trembling finally began to subside.
Then, the roar of a high-performance engine shattered the quiet outside.
Tires screeched violently across the wet cobblestones of the circular driveway. Heavy car doors slammed shut.
A moment later, Dominic burst through the sitting room doors.
His tailored black suit was soaked through with rain, his dark hair plastered against his forehead. His gray-blue eyes burned with an unhinged, predatory rage that made the room temperature instantly plummet.
He ignored the servants and his mother entirely, marching straight toward the sofa where Clara sat.
He reached down, his large hand grabbing Clara by the collar of her borrowed robe, hauling her upward until she was forced onto her tiptoes.
"You think running here saves that bastard?" he snarled, his voice vibrating with pure malice. "You walked out of that clinic, and Vivian nearly flatlined because my team was distracted looking for you!"
"Dominic Montgomery! Release her this instant!"
Victoria's silver cane struck the marble coffee table with a resounding crack, shattering an antique porcelain teacup into a dozen jagged pieces.
The matriarch stood tall, stepping directly between Dominic and Clara, using her cane to shove Dominic's wrist away with surprising force.
"She is carrying a Montgomery," Victoria said, her voice freezing the air in the room. "As long as I draw breath, you will not lay a finger on that child."
Dominic's fingers twitched, his signet ring scraping against the fabric of Clara's collar before he slowly let go. His jaw worked furiously.
"You are protecting a liar, Mother," Dominic said, his gaze drilling into Clara with lethal intensity. "Vivian is fighting for her life in the main house because of the complications from her coma. This woman is nothing but an opportunistic stand-in who stole a sample to secure a trust fund."
"I do not care about your obsession with Vivian," Victoria replied cold and level. "I care about the bloodline. Clara stays under my roof. If you want to touch her, you will have to drag me out of this house first."
Mother and son stared each other down in complete silence, the tension in the room thick enough to choke on.
Finally, Dominic let out a low, humorless laugh.
He stepped back, smoothing down the front of his wet jacket.
"Fine. Keep her here."
He turned toward the exit, his dress shoes crunching over the broken porcelain on the floor. At the doorframe, he stopped and looked back over his shoulder, his profile stark against the shadows.
"Enjoy the sanctuary while it lasts, Clara. You can't hide in this house forever."
