The Betrayed Prodigy's Spectacular Magical Comeback

Available on official platform

Reginald Montgomery POV:

From the floor-to-ceiling arched windows of the Headmaster's Tower, the sprawling granite ramparts of Wanling Magic School looked majestic against the twilight sky. Yet, as I watched the floating carriages arrive from across the realm, a persistent migraine throbbed behind my temples.

The heavy mahogany door clicked open. Vice-Headmaster Vance hurried in, placing a freshly printed edition of the Star-Lantern Gazette onto my desk.

"He's arrived, Headmaster," Vance said, his voice tinged with suppressed excitement. "Dean Sterling returned from his secluded cultivation early this morning. The press is already calling it the breakthrough of the century."

I glanced down at the moving photograph on the front page. Alistair Sterling stood atop a cliff of crystalline fire, brandishing his golden wand with radiant charisma, claiming to have unraveled the ancient Wither Curse. It was a brilliant accomplishment, certainly, but Alistair's relentless hunger for fame and influence had grown far too sharp for my liking.

"The students are ecstatic," Vance continued, oblivious to my unease. "All the House Deans have already assembled in the Great Hall. Everyone knows this Sorting Ceremony belongs to Pyrespire House."

I sighed, pulling a single parchment from the stack of incoming freshman files. The name inked across the top glowed with faint celestial resonance: Holly Hays.

This year, she is finally set to enroll—the most dazzling, most anticipated prodigy of this incoming class. The entire academy is waiting to see what she will become.

"Five years ago, our scouts discovered her in the mortal provinces," I murmured, tracing the girl's extraordinary evaluation runes. "An innate magical font unseen in a hundred years. By all rights and traditions, she was earmarked for Alistair's personal tutelage the moment she crossed our threshold."

Stepping out onto the stone balcony, I cast a subtle Amplified Auditory Ward to monitor the courtyard below. The faculty members were gathered beneath the grand colonnade, their voices drifting upward on the autumn breeze.

"Is it true, Harold?" Graham Foster, the gruff Dean of Aegis House, rumbled. "Sterling refused to take a single private apprentice for five full terms just to wait for the Hays girl?"

"Indeed," replied Harold Miller, the gentle Dean of Sylvan House. "Alistair has made no secret of it. He even petitioned the Board of Governors to ensure the Crown of Origin yields to his preference tonight."

My brows knitted into a tight frown. To interfere with the Crown of Origin was a direct violation of a thousand years of sacred collegiate neutrality. Alistair was growing reckless in his arrogance.

Turning away from the balcony, I walked down the grand corridor lined with portraits of former headmasters. As I passed the gilded frame of Lord Sinclair, the painted figure scoffed lazily from within his canvas. "Don't expect much decorum tonight, Reginald. My worthless descendant Julian is probably asleep on the high table already."

I offered a bitter, weary smile. Julian Beaumont, the current Dean of Abyssal House, was brilliant in his youth, but he had long since devolved into an idle eccentric who treated the most ancient House of our school like a retirement lounge. Abyssal House had not produced a notable graduate in a decade.

Straightening my deep purple ceremonial robes, I pushed open the towering brass doors of the Great Hall.

A thousand suspended candles cast a warm, golden glow over the four long tables packed with chattering students. On the raised dais, three of the House Deans sat in their ornate chairs—save for the center-left seat belonging to Pyrespire House. Alistair, as always, preferred a theatrical entrance.

The moment I reached the podium, the brass doors parted once more.

Alistair strode into the hall wearing resplendent crimson-and-gold velvet robes. The Great Hall erupted into thunderous applause. He carried himself like a conquering king, waving with polished warmth to the adoring crowd before ascending the platform.

He leaned toward me, his voice smooth and brimming with self-assured vanity. "Headmaster. I trust our little mortal prodigy is prepared to meet her destiny?"

"The Crown of Origin will decide her destiny, Alistair," I replied evenly, raising my hand to command silence.

Channeling my voice through an acoustic ward, I addressed the assembly: "Students, faculty, honored guests. Tonight, we welcome a most extraordinary talent to our sacred halls. Bring forth the candidates!"

The massive doors swung wide. The hall fell dead silent as all eyes turned toward the entrance, eager to witness the crowning of the century's brightest star.

I had no idea I was about to preside over the greatest scandal in the school's history.
