Chapter 3 of 66

The Betrayed Prodigy's Spectacular Magical Comeback

Available on official platform

Holly Hays POV:

A soft, insistent tapping against the glass pulled me from the shadows of the antechamber. A majestic snowy owl, its plumage pristine despite the autumn drizzle, perched on the sill outside.

Tied to its leg with a crimson ribbon was a thick, cream-colored envelope sealed with the unmistakable four-house crest of Wanling Magic School.

The owl extended its leg with dignified patience. I untied the letter with trembling fingers.

The parchment inside was written in shimmering, emerald ink:

Dear Miss Holly Hays,

It is our distinct pleasure to inform you that you have been selected for admission to Wanling Magic School, the premier institution for arcane excellence in the realm.

Your extraordinary innate magical font has been confirmed by our scouts, and your place among our hallowed halls awaits.

Please present this letter, along with your person, to the Gateway Keeper at the threshold of the Veiled Crossing. The bearer of this missive is authorized to guide you through the boundary between the mortal realm and our sacred grounds.

We eagerly anticipate your arrival at the Sorting Ceremony.

Yours in magic,

Headmaster Reginald Montgomery

Wanling Magic School

The snowy owl—a magnificent, intelligent creature with amber eyes that seemed to see straight through me—hopped from the sill onto my shoulder. It nipped gently at my ear, as if to say, "Hurry up, we're late."

I followed the owl out of the antechamber. It led me through a winding, torch-lit corridor that I didn't recognize from my previous life—a secret passage used only for mortal-born arrivals. At the end, a massive archway shimmered with a translucent, opalescent veil: the Veiled Crossing.

The owl hooted once, and the veil parted.

I stepped through.

The world dissolved into a kaleidoscope of light and color—the mortal realm, with its grey cities and mundane skies, falling away like a discarded husk. For a breathless moment, I floated in a void of pure starlight.

Then the school materialized around me.

I stood in the Great Hall, the owl still perched on my shoulder. The heavy oak door behind me swung open, and an older student wearing the bronze shield crest of Aegis House poked his head inside. "Hays? You're up. The Headmaster is introducing you right now. Don't keep the high table waiting."

My legs felt like solid lead as I stood, but a cold, ferocious clarity settled over my racing heart. The owl gave my ear one final, encouraging nip before launching itself into the shadowed rafters, its white wings vanishing into the gloom.

I smoothed down the plain, unadorned black robes of an unsorted novice, stepped past the threshold, and walked into the blinding radiance of the Great Hall.

A wall of noise washed over me. Over a thousand students and faculty leaned forward from their seats, their gazes a suffocating mixture of awe, envy, and curiosity. Floating above the center of the hall, massive illusory projections mirrored the proceedings for the entire assembly.

My eyes swept across the raised dais at the far end of the hall, immediately locking onto the man sitting in the gilded chair of Pyrespire House.

Alistair Sterling.

He was looking down at me with that exact same look of predatory appraisal—the look of an artisan inspecting a flawless piece of marble he planned to carve up for scrap.

A phantom agony flared in the center of my chest, so vivid and sharp that I almost took a step back. I dug my fingernails into my palms until the sharp pain anchored me in the present.

Breathe, Holly. He knows nothing. He thinks you are a naive, grateful sheep.

Forcing the muscles of my face to relax, I tilted my head, casting my eyes down with the rehearsed timidity of a bewildered commoner overwhelmed by the grandeur of high magic.

Alistair's smile broadened slightly, clearly satisfied with my apparent submissiveness.

As I walked down the central aisle, my gaze drifted to the secondary magical projection hovering above the southern flank of the hall.

It displayed the profiles of borderline candidates awaiting remedial placement. Among them was a frail, plain-faced girl with downcast eyes and trembling lips: Beverly Wynn.

I caught Alistair's subtle glance. While his posture was directed at me, his peripheral vision was locked entirely onto Beverly's image. The feverish, obsessive devotion burning in his eyes was identical to the madness I had seen when he drove that dagger into my heart.

Nothing had changed. He had already found his surrogate white lotus, and I was already earmarked as the blood sacrifice to fuel her ascension.

I reached the foot of the dais. Headmaster Montgomery stood before me, holding aloft the ancient, tarnished silver circlet known as the Crown of Origin.

"Step forward, child," the Headmaster said gently. "Let the Crown reveal your true path."

I took a slow, steady breath, stepping up onto the dais with ice in my veins.

This time, Alistair, you will burn in the fire you built for me.
